Here’s How The New Marijuana Laws in Ottawa Apply to You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

As of today, smoking marijuana will be legal! You can basically smoke it anywhere where smoking cigarettes is allowed too. There are some restrictions, and the laws differ from province to province.

But what does this mean for you? Here are 5 tips you need to know before you decide to smoke a blunt in public.

1. You CAN’T smoke it on campus at Carleton.

The school has a strict no-smoking policy in place now. A school-wide email was sent saying, “after reviewing the legislation and how it applies to Carleton, it has been determined that smoking or vaping recreational cannabis on the Carleton campus will not be permitted.” The school does say they are willing to allow medical marijuana on a case-by-case basis.

2. You CAN’T smoke it in your car while driving.

It’s the same rules as alcohol. Be safe and don’t drive high!

3. You CAN smoke on sidewalks and parks (that aren’t owned by the city of Ottawa).

4. You CAN smoke it in your home, if your lease/landlord allow it, or if it is your property.

5. You CAN smoke in different parks that belong to the National Capital Commission (NCC) but you CAN’T smoke if there’s a festival or event taking place.

Place’s like Hog’s Back are a go, but you will need to put the pipe away if there’s an event taking place, because the City of Ottawa wants vendors to promote a smoke-free environment.

Also, as a rule of thumb, please be respectful with people around you, not everyone appreciates Mary-J. Some don’t like the smell, some have had bad experiences and some people are just not interested.  So try not to show up to class smelling like bong water and munching chips throughout the lectures.

Stay safe out there folks! And remember you can’t smoke it unless you’re 19+.

Besides that, happy weed day every day!
