5 Reasons Why Sorority Life is for You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal State LA chapter.

Have you ever thought about joining a sorority, but think twice about it and consider that it’s not for you? Don’t worry! You’re not alone. Many women have thought about rushing for a sorority at least once in their undergraduate career, but because of many bad images that the media portrays of them, people can only conceive sorority women as party girls. But a sorority and the life that comes with it includes many things! Here are 5 reasons why you should consider joining a sorority!

1. Academics

One of the main priorities of a collegiate includes her studies. We always have to keep up with classes and maintain those good grades and you don’t have to give that up by joining a sorority. Academics are very important to the Greek community! That is why every sorority on campus has different GPA qualifications and different programs that can help and support their members with their studies. The best part? You will meet more friends who have the same major as you that can help you with your classes and or study with you at all times!

2. Philanthropy

If you love to volunteer and help out in the community, or if you have a cause that you feel strongly about, then joining a sorority is exactly the right move for you! Every sorority on campus has their own philanthropies that they support and always raise funds for. Each of them has a great cause that they take seriously. For example, my sorority’s philanthropy is speech and hearing so we are currently raising money on a national level for Starkey Hearing Foundation that will help create hearing clinics in third world countries.

3. Sisterhood

One of the biggest benefits of being in a sorority is that you will meet and become friends with many different types of women. You will be able to form a special type of friendship; even if you need help at 3 AM, someone will come to you. You will meet your forever friends, those who are willing to accept you no matter who or what you are, those who will help you be a better person, and those who will inspire you to live your best life.

4. Parties

Of course, parties are always a part of that college experience we’ve always dream of since high school, and partying like a sorority girl doesn’t automatically labels you as a “party girl.” Sorority parties are not just fun, but they are safe and regulated. Because sorority parties are registered with the school, alcoholic beverages are not always present, but if they are, sorority women are prepared for scenarios that may arise and take care of each other.

5. Sports

If you enjoy playing sports as a hobby, guess what? Sorority women do too! Associated Student Incorporated sponsors quarterly intramurals where every organization can participate and sorority women are always there not only to cheer, but also to play! Every sorority on campus has players that participate in flag football, soccer, and all the other sports that are available through out the school year. It is always a friendly competition, and win or lose, it is still fun all around.

Hey, we get it. Being in a commuter school, it is so hard to get involved and try out new things, and all the misconceptions about sororities just make it even harder to take that step and sign up for one. But hopefully all the reasons above opened your mind about what sorority life can offer you, not just for the rest of your undergraduate career, but for the rest of your life!
