A “Gilmore Girls” Inspired Self-Care Night

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

We’ve all been Rory: stressed out about school, annoyed at boys, and in desperate need of some junk food and a movie. The Gilmore girls know exactly how to cheer each other up. We think that after a long week of studying and midterms, this “Gilmore Girls” inspired self-care night would be the perfect pick-me-up that Lorelai and Rory would approve of.

First, you’ll need coffee…

Except don’t actually drink coffee because coffee will keep you from sleeping, despite the many times Lorelai chugs coffee during late hours of the night. And because sleep is essential to self-care, you can instead get coffee ice cream, which will still satisfy Lorelai without keeping you up all night.

You will, undoubtedly, need a ton of junk food…

Order your favorite food whether it be takeout, pizza, burgers, but a really “Gilmore Girls” dinner idea would be having breakfast for dinner. Donuts, French toast, pancakes, Pop-Tarts, everything and more! The Gilmore girls will never tell you it’s too much, so, by all means, give in to any craving you have.

You will, of course, need tons of sweets and chips and popcorn, as if an elaborate dinner wasn’t enough. The Gilmore girls don’t get full.

Time to pick a movie…

Rory and Lorelai have countless movie nights where they eat junk food and making witty comments about the movie they’re watching. You could pick your favorite movie to watch or you can watch one of the Gilmore approved movies such as Casablanca, Hardbodies, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Annie Hall, etc. There is no shortage of fantastic movies referenced in this show, and they are all revered by Lorelai and Rory, so you can’t go wrong.

Invite your besties…

What’s self-care without laughter, witty comments, and someone to share your excessive amount of food with. Maybe it’s your mom or maybe it’s your roommate, but they should absolutely be invited. And if they’re not around, call them; during Rory’s time at college, she and her mom spent plenty of time on the phone together, enjoying their company in an alternate way and we encourage you to do the same.

And finally, indulge in some online shopping

The Gilmore girls love to go shopping for clothes and jewelry, and what better way to shop than from the comfort of your house when you have your snacks and friends all around you. You don’t even have to buy anything, the Gilmore girls are big fans of window shopping retail therapy.

We hope this gives you some ideas on how to relax after a long week in the style of the iconic Gilmore girls. If all else fails, you can always turn on the actual show and escape to Stars Hollow.
