8 Reasons Why You Need to Attend the Anthem Poetry Slam

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Every spring, a group of students, including Megan Healy and Harrison Joseph Trubitt, put on “The Anthem,” a poetry slam where famous spoken word poets from across the country take the stage at Chumash Auditorium to perform. This is different from other poetry events that take place on campus such as the Multicultural Center’s Another Type of Groove (ATOG) and the Cal Poly Student Slam.

This year, the event will take place on Monday, May 15th. Wondering why you should check it out? You’ve come to the right place!

1. Change your perspective on poetry

There is a common belief that poetry is only written by certain types of people for a certain audience and about certain topics, or that it’s boring. Definitely not true. Here’s to disproving all of that!

2. Good. Vibes.

Okay, maybe not this wild, but the excitement and positivity of both the performers and crowd will be contagious!

3. Experience nationally renowned poets

These performers are highly regarded in the world of poetry! One received an award from President Obama in 2012. Another was named the 2010 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion. Did someone say celebrity?

4.  Listen to relatable topics

The poetry slam guarantees that you will be all “*snap snap* PREACH” to at least one performance.

5.  Learn something new

As much as you may relate to one performance, others will open your eyes to other relevant issues and empower you to take action.

6.  Meet new people!

Anthem draws in a huge crowd every year, so you’re bound to make new friends!

7. The perfect way to start off your week

Mondays suck. But this will be an awesome way to destress and start off the week on the right foot!

8. It’s a welcoming environment

Poetry is an open and welcoming place that unites people of all walks of life. All are welcomed. :)
