10 Ways to Become Your Happiest, Healthiest Self (As Told By Animals)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

1. They get enough sleep.

Getting ample rest not only keeps your mind alert and focused, but research shows that it can also improve your mood, slow the aging process, reduce stress, aid in weight loss and even keep cancer at bay.  There’s a reason getting lots of sleep makes the top of this list!

2. They stay hydrated.

Ever noticed how health-conscious people always carry a water bottle around?  There’s a good reason for that: drinking water keeps your skin, muscles, kidneys and digestive system in top shape.  Staying hydrated also allows your brain to better let your body know when you’re actually hungry, so it’s a good way to abstain from overeating.

3. They surround themselves with people they care about, and people who, in turn, genuinely care for them.

Here’s a great reason to put off writing that essay and spending a night with the girls instead: studies  show that people who feel socially isolated are more likely to suffer from depression, high stress levels and daytime fatigue.  So yes, while staying focused on school is important, make sure to make plenty of time for friends and family, too!

4. They unplug.

Yes, technology is great, but one of the keys to health and happiness is knowing when to turn it off.  It’s especially important to put down your electronics at least an hour before going to bed, as research has shown that the glaring screen light can cause trouble sleeping.

5. They spend time outdoors.

Even taking a step outside and having a breath of fresh air in the morning can make all the difference.  This 2009 study concluded that people who live in or near a green, natural environment have fewer anxiety disorders and digestive issues than those who don’t.

6. hey control their alcohol intake.

This dapper dog is doing it right: experts recommend limiting alcohol consumption to one glass of wine a day, preferably with a meal.  In fact, drinking red wine in moderation can actually benefit your health, as it can lower cholesterol and reduce blood clotting, among other perks.

7. They wear sunscreen.

Every day.  Yep, even when it’s cloudy.  It’s a good habit to get into if you want to keep your skin free of wrinkles — your 65-year old self will thank you when people say you don’t look a day over 35.

8. They don’t get hung up on failures.

The healthiest and happiest of people know that it’s essential to move forward with life, even though it means hitting some speed bumps along the way!

9. They appreciate the little things.

According to the journal Applied Psychology: Health and Wellbeing, showing gratitude can actually improve a person’s long-term health.

10. They take time to do what they love.

No one ever said you couldn’t stay healthy and have a little fun in the process!

I like iced coffee, red lipstick, good books, short runs, Korean rap, big dogs, warm weather, funny people and cheese. Lots and lots of cheese. Writing is fun too, I guess.  Find me on Twitter: [at]cseiter17.
