Why Everyone Should Listen to Girl Bands

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Some people might say, why would I listen to a girl band? All they sing about is heartbreak. Well Im here to tell you that if you listen closely, their messages are so much more than just heartbreak.

Take Little Mix’s new song “Shout Out to my Ex” for example. In this song, although they talk about a breakup, they are singing about how breakups help you to grow as a person and find yourself. One of the lines in their song is “You made my heart break and that made me who I am.” I feel like this line says so much in just a few words. It tells those going through a breakup that this breakup wont define them, but it will help them grow into the person that they soon will be.

In Fifth Harmony’s song “Brave Honest Beautiful” They talk about how all girls in the world are beautiful in their own way, and they list a few of the fiercest and most inspirational women in the industry. This is a song all about building confidence in yourself. The main lyric in this song is, “’Cause you’re brave, yeah, you’re fearless and you’re beautiful.” This one lyric empowers girls to be themselves, and to feel beautiful in their own skin.

The Spice Girls for example are one of the most well known girl bands that there has been. In their song “Wannabe”, they say everything that every girl going into relationship should say. They make it known that when going into a relationship it is important not to lose who you are, and it is important not to throw your friends to the wayside for your significant other.

Another great example of an empowering female group would have to be Destiny’s Child. Their song “Independent Women” is an extremely empowering song for all women in the world. It reminds women that they don’t need someone else in their lives to be successful and happy. This song reminds us all that happiness has to come from us, and not someone else.
