We Must Stop Legitimizing Donald Trump

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Donald Trump is a mess, and I refuse to believe that he will be president.

That’s what I thought three…maybe four months ago.

Now I’m scared. Terrified. Horror-stricken.

Donald Trump might actually be president.

I tried to ignore the facts. I’ve told myself that America couldn’t possibly vote for, rally behind, and stand with a man who clumps together an entire group of people and discriminates against them for nothing more than their heritage of their religion.

But Super Tuesday has come and gone, and the numbers don’t lie, the verdict is in, and apparently Donald Trump is still a front runner in this presidential campaign.

Recently in my general psychology class, I’ve learned about the stages of development. During the ages of 3-6, children go through an egotistical stage where they cannot see things from other people’s points of view; they are incapable of understanding where other people come from.

But, usually around the ages of 7, kids gain a theory of mind in which they can finally see the world as other people see it; they understand others’ points of view.

So now, looking at Donald Trump with this in mind, it seems that he is still in this egotistical phase. Essentially, Donald Trump does not even have the brain capacity of a seven-year-old.

And people are voting for him as president?

That’s alarming.

No matter if you agree with Donald on abortion, military power, or gun control, none of that should matter.

Whether or not you agree with him on foreign policy or you like his raw honesty that other political candidates are unwilling to give should also not matter.

We cannot, and should not, vote for a man who wants to throw out an entire group of people simply because of their ethnicity or religion.

He’s wrongly placing the problems of this country on these people; they are his scapegoat. He’s pretending that our country’s problems can all be magically fixed if we just toss out entire groups of people—but he’s wrong.

And these words he’s spitting out into the public are poisonous. He’s leading hundreds upon thousands of Americans to believe that building a wall on the Mexican border or stopping Muslims from entering America will really end all our problems. But it won’t.

We can’t just estrange an entire country or an entire group of people. Being president is about creating diplomatic relationships, not tearing them down.

If the president of the United States of America is constantly stereotyping a large group of people and then ostracizing them based on this extreme generalization, this country will start snowballing down the path of Nazi Germany.

Hitler was an amazing speaker who could captivate any audience. He knew what to say and how to say it, and people followed him. And through his powerful speech, millions of innocent people were killed.

This is frighteningly similar to what Donald Trump is doing.

He is using flashy, uncensored speech to draw attention to himself, and then he is spoon-feeding fraudulent, deceptive “easy fixes” at everyone listening.

The media can’t get enough of Donald Trump because his quotes are so eccentric, and America seems to not be able to get enough of his bold ideas.

But we need to stop.

We need to stop and listen to the implications behind what Donald Trump is saying. I don’t care if he seems to have all the answers. I don’t care if you agree with his stances on different political issues. America cannot have a racist, uncensored, egotistical man as president.

Think about the kind of leader you would want to represent this country, who you would want to represent you. If we needed someone to go out to foreign countries and make life-changing decisions for the future and safety of this country, would you want the man who doesn’t think before he speaks?

Would you want the man who has no filter?

Would you want the man with no respect for anyone but himself?

Would you want Donald Trump?
