Wander with Me: Piuma Road

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Piuma Road:

This week’s adventure takes us to a seriously cool spot that overlooks Malibu. On a clear day, you can see the ocean perfectly and the hills roll on forever. When it’s cloudy, you feel like you’re living in a dream when you reach the top. Both experiences are seriously amazing.

Piuma Road is a long, windy canyon road that takes you from the bottom of the valley to the top of the Santa Monica Mountains. The drive itself is so pretty; not to mention, there are plenty of spots to stop and take a break from driving with breathtaking views.

Directions: Head South on the 101 freeway, toward Calabasas. Exit Lost Hills and turn right on Las Virgenes. At the second traffic light, turn left onto Piuma Road. From here: up, up, up!

About three fourths of the way up you’ll drive right around a raised dirt parking lot (the road literally does a U-turn around this spot) with picnic tables and a serious view. If you have a second to stop, it’s a really nice place to run around, especially if you don’t want to go “full adventure” on the rock-crawling excitement that the top of Piuma road will lead you to. Bring some snacks and enjoy yourself with some really beautiful scenery.

If you’d like to keep exploring, head up the last stretch of Piuma Road. You’ll eventually turn around to the other side of the mountain and start to get views of the ocean. Keep your eyes peeled for the various dirt turn-outs to park in. One of these spots that is just before a sharp left turn in the road will be perfect to explore these unique rock formations (bend in the road shown below, enter onto the rocks at these arrows!).

Hop out of the car and adventure around these pretty boulders!

Theres some really awesome graffiti around that always sparks some new thoughts and creativity. Bring a journal or a sketch book and find a comfy crevice to sit down on and take everything in. Or bring along your fisheye lens and take way too many pictures, like I did. You can’t get enough of this place!

Or just simply enjoy the view :)

Trust me, this one’s worth the drive! Take some friends and head out on a really nice adventure. This spot is breathtaking no matter the weather.

Don’t forget to be respectful to the land and these pretty rocks. We want them to stay a perfect adventure spot! <3

Tell me how you like it!
