Her Campus Cal Lutheran: What’s your major and how did you decide on it?

Andrea Sanchez: Psychology and Spanish. I am interested in psychology because I feel that many predominantly Hispanic communities are not exposed or have resources to see a psychologist. I am majoring in Spanish for personal reasons, I am a proud Mexican and want to strengthen my identity and skills.

HCCLU: Why did you decide to attend CLU?

AS: I decided to attend Cal Lutheran because I have the option to live on campus or commute, it’s not too far nor close from home. I really like the peaceful vibes the campus emits plus the small class sizes.HCCLU: Are you involved in anything on campus?

AS: I’m a member of the Latin American Student Organization and a Multicultural Volunteer.

HCCLU: Since you’re almost halfway done with your undergrad, how has it gone so far?

AS: My first year was a little bumpy, I am very close to my family so adjusting to not seeing them every day was hard which affected me academically. Now that I am commuting, I have noticed an increase in academic achievement. I am very proud!

HCCLU: What has been your favorite memory at Cal Lutheran so far?

AS: Definitely the activities we did during freshman orientation; I met many people who I consider good friends.HCCLU: What do you think is the hardest part about being a college student?

AS: The hardest part of being an undergrad is that I’m a first generation college student, so there is a gap between my parents and I. They do not understand how time consuming and demanding college courses are; they think I’m constantly being lazy and use homework as an excuse to avoid chores.

HCCLU: Who inspires you the most in life and why?

AS: My mom because she is strong and intelligent. She demonstrated her determination to succeed and received an education in Mexico in a time where society did not support women furthering their education.HCCLU: What’s your dream job?

AS: To be a Marriage and Family Therapist or a Child Developmentalist. I really want to work with kids and make an impact in their lives.

HCCLU: Do you have a life motto or quote you live by?

AS: My motto is “Si Se Puede” to everything and anything; I love the promotion of positivity and determination.

HCCLU: What’s your favorite childhood memory?

AS: My favorite childhood memory was the day when we got our first dog; I was in 5th grade and had always dreamed of having a puppy!HCCLU: When do you think you’ll be able to say that you “made it” in life?

AS: Once I am finished with my career, have my own little family and am able to pay back my parents for their hard work.

HCCLU: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

AS: I would go to Bora Bora because I love the sun and beach. It seems so relaxing.
