Childhood traditions

Growing up, my family established traditions for the holidays. Thanksgiving specifically was the holiday that my parents hosted at our house. Our family members always come to our house early in the afternoon to help my mom cook while all the kids play outside. We have the traditional long table for all our family members, we eat turkey and ham, say what we are thankful for and we pray.

Opening up our home

My family is very welcoming especially during the holidays because we understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to have someone to spend the holidays with. During Thanksgiving my family always makes sure to invite anyone who may not have a family to be with to spend the day with us. Many times we have had guests such as our neighbors or just friends who did not have plans or do not have anyone to spend Thanksgiving with.

Making a difference in the way that I perceive things

Because I grew up having a family who has always been caring and inclusive to others, it allowed me to learn to always be generous and thankful for what I have. I always make sure to offer my home to people I know in case they do not have anyone to spend the holidays with. I do not do just do this because it is something that I have been taught, but also because I understand that although sometimes my family is not perfect I am fortunate to have one because there are others that do not.

The holiday season is very significant to me because it brings a lot of good memories. My family has many traditions that I intend to pass on to my future family when I grow older. I hope to one day teach my children to always be thankful and to always be humble and generous with others.
