Spring Break: Expectation v. Reality

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

At the start of Spring Break last week, I had a mental list of everything that I was going to accomplish to catch up with my schoolwork and get ahead for the rest of the semester. Here is the list of everything that was supposed to be completed by the end of the week:

  • Finishing my research paper
  • Making my presentation for said research paper
  • Making a PowerPoint presentation for a different class
  • Making yet another PowerPoint
  • Finishing two lesson plans
  • Finishing a portfolio
  • Deep cleaning my entire room and bathroom
  • Re-arranging my room

Now here is the list of what actually happened last week:

  • Sleeping until noon every single day
  • Finally watching season 2 of Euphoria
  • Watching season 2 of Bridgerton with my mom
  • I actually did end up cleaning my house and doing laundry so that was one goal accomplished

As you can see, I accomplished practically nothing off of my original list, and instead, I spent the week relaxing and watching shows that I had not had time to watch yet because of homework. Now that I am back at school for our last few weeks and I am staring at my assignment calendar full of fast-approaching deadlines, part of me wishes that I had done more over the break, but the other part of me knows that I needed time to myself. This semester, we went for a long time without a break, so I think I am speaking for all of us when I say that we are exhausted. Personally, I went from having school and approximately thirty hours per week at work to working forty hours a week during the winter break with only a week off, to this current semester along with twenty-five hours a week at work. It had been a while since I truly relaxed. Often, students fail to give themselves a real break out of fear of falling behind or guilt for not working. It can be difficult to let myself relax and actually enjoy a show without having to have my laptop with me, but it is important for us all to take some time for ourselves and do something we love.
