Reality Check: The Failures of Colonialism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Why do you help others? Is it to look good in front of people? Or is it to actually help the human population grow and evolve? Normally, altruism does not exist in any form, whether it is human or animal.

This also goes in terms of politics and the world at large. Colonization has been played as an innocent act in American history through stories of the pilgrims and Thanksgiving traditions. However, there is much more to those stories. It is a story that crosses the line of human rights. Other countries around the world have attempted to take over land or build up nations against the interest of other nation.

Colonization is the act of taking over land to create a nation funded and operated by the motherland. Yet, there are other agendas prevail. Exploitation of resources, whether it is through natural resources or man-made resources, is a huge outcome of colonization. In many cases only some cities and towns are industrialized, built up and connected to each other with a road system. For some countries such as those in Africa, colonization cuts off the rest of the nation from resources. This leads to no adequate ways for villages that are so far from drivable roads to reach medical attention, receive shipments of food, or obtain any means of survival.

The fragile states index shows many countries that have been affected by colonization. The host nation is merely picked on by a stronger force, groomed to believe it is legitimate and then frankly thrown away. These states attempt to emulate what they know and what they know is that of a stronger nation. However, this solution does not help, as there is not interconnectivity within the nation because of the way it is set up. The other problem is identity. When a country invades and tells a population that their beliefs are wrong, there is room for chaos. Furthermore, this foreign force has intruded against the nation’s current laws and governance. Who can the people depend on? This becomes the prevalent question. As the new government may be attempting to exploit the people by paying off the higher ups within the host nation, who can the people trust? This is the ultimate reason as to why a nation would fall. There is no legitimacy for the people for the government.

Colonization is truly a human rights issue. Compromised is that of the livelihood of a nation but also individuals in terms of tradition, standards of living, and identity. There truly is no mystery as to why colonization does not work when it is a system groomed to look as though it is helping when in reality it causes more harm and damage.
