An Open Letter to America on This Election

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Dear America,

How did we get to this point?

How did we get to the point where there’s hardly a difference between a candidate with 30 years of political experience and a candidate with none?

When I go to the doctor, I want an experienced physician who can diagnose my illness correctly. When I get my teeth cleaned, I want a practiced hygienist who won’t cut my gums. And when I look to my president, I want someone who has had practice dealing with foreign counties, economic issues, and controversial topics.

Dear America,

How did we get here?

How did we get to the point where someone who has no respect for anyone but white males can lead the polls?

I get that, sometimes, fundamental issues like same-sex marriage, immigration, gun control, abortion, and health care might make you lean toward Donald J. Trump, but there’s so much more to being a president than those five issues.

The president of the United States of America represents me, represents you, and represents our country. And I do not want the world to look at Mr. Trump and assume that I—and all Americans—think and act in the same fashion as him.

But if you like someone who can’t control his tongue, has openly disrespected women, wants to block an entire religion from entering our country, and has mocked people with disabilities, just because you agree with him on those five issues, remember this: there are so many other economic, ecological, and international responsibilities of the US President that require not only experience, but also someone who can hold their tongue, someone who can understand other people’s perspectives, and someone who can be willing to compromise.

Dear America,

Whether you voted for Trump, Clinton, Johnson, or no one at all, I ask you this: How did we get here? How can we overlook the racism, sexism, and hatred of a man so much that he could make it this far in the election? How can we let our distaste for the democratic candidate override our human decency? How can we allow Mr. Trump to be a legitimate candidate in becoming a major decision maker for this country? I understand that everyone has their own values, that everyone reasons differently, that everyone makes their own decisions, but this, America, I will never understand.
