A “Jake” Of All Trades

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Name: Jake Gallagher

Year: Junior

Hometown: Canyon Lake, CA

Major: Marketing Communications

Being able to handle a lot of commitments in life is difficult. Jake Gallagher makes handling these many commitments seem very easy.  He is an integral part of the water polo team at Cal Lutheran, a committed student, and has many hobbies and friends that he is always able to make time for. “I surf and travel a lot to surf, I’m a fishing addict, I also love to snowboard, rock climb, and shoot firearms,” said Jake. How does he pull off his busy life? Jake said he handles it all with, “caffeine and the occasional stressed out phone call home to my mommy.”

Jake chose to come to Cal Lutheran “for the intimate small school vibe and the laid back campus. I love the fact that I can have close personal relationships with all of my professors and that I can walk around campus at any time of the day and see at least 20 people I know.” Jake’s favorite memories at Cal Lutheran have been the time he has spent with his teammates and the struggles they go through together every water polo season. Because this last weekend was Admitted Students Day, Jake has this advice for incoming students: “Every semester meet as many people as you can in the first few weeks of school because chances are those are the people you will be hanging out with for the rest of that term.”

Jake has a lot of things he wants to do in life. His love of fishing and surfing has inspired him to want to some day travel to Nicaragua to surf and fish there! He has already traveled to “a bunch of places in Mexico to surf, but I love San Jose Del Cabo for its laid back atmosphere, great surf, incredible fishing, and amazing food.”

Jake is an ambitious guy. He has his future planned and there is no one that can stop him from achieving his dreams. Jake said after college, “I will go straight to fire academy then paramedic school, work on an ambulance as a medic for about six months to a year while applying for various fire departments as a paramedic firefighter.”  Other than becoming a paramedic firefighter in the future, Jake also wants to be able, “to support my family in being able to live a comfortable lifestyle, and to lead a life worthy to be a role model to [his] future children and be a faithful, dependable husband to [his] future wife.” Jake does have an inspiration for his dreams: his father. “Although I’m totally a momma’s boy and I love her unconditionally, I think I have to say my dad [is my inspiration in life]. He is my ultimate role model and has been my inspiration to choose a career in the fire service. I only hope that one day I can be even half the man, father, and husband that he is.”
