Her Campus Cal Lutheran: How does it feel to be a Campus Cutie?

Jackson Van Kirk: It’s flattering! It’s cool to be recognized for anything.

HC: What made you want to go to Cal Lutheran?

JV: The small school, you can make your own destiny at a small school. There’s more opportunities for what you can do and it’s a good location since it’s in Southern California.

HC: In what ways are you involved on campus?

JV: I do photography for the CLU sports website, I work for game management at the soccer and volleyball games, and I’m also an intern at the William Rolland Art Gallery.

HC: How long have you been interested in photography?

JV: About four years ago, when I got my first iPhone and was taking pictures at our beach house. My Nana said she really liked them and her and my grandpa got me a nice lens for my camera.

HC: How long have you been surfing?

JV: The first time I surfed I was in second grade, and over the past 3-4 years I’ve been doing it a lot more.

HC: What’s your favorite thing about surfing?

JV: Just being with my friends out in the water. It’s not always “Hawaii great” conditions but it’s always great to be hanging out with my friends in the ocean and in that atmosphere.

HC: What’s your worst habit?

JV: Picking at my nails.

HC: What’s something no one really knows about you but you think they should?

JV: I’m Christian. So I think that’s something I would like people to know about me. God is really awesome and I’m thankful for everything He’s blessed me with.

HC: Who is your biggest role model and why?

JV: Probably my dad. For the longest time I wanted to be a professional basketball player and since he played college basketball he was always helping me out. But also life-wise because he has worked so hard to get where he is in his professional career and with the family he has. He would do anything for our family and has set an example for me to be a Godly man.

HC: If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?

JV: I’d want to be alive when Jesus was alive– that time was gnarly. Or just 40 years ago when Newport Beach was desolate and not the like it is today. Or even to 200 years ago when California was totally unsettled and every wave was unridden.

HC: If you could trade places with anyone for a day who would it be?

JV: John John Florence. He’s a professional surfer.

HC: What’s the best date you and your girlfirend have ever been on?

JV: We went camping together and it was awesome because we went to San Clemente State Beach. I was able to surf and there was no one on the water and she was just hanging out on the beach taking pictures.

HC: What’s your favorite thing about your girlfriend?

JV: We have a lot in common. She likes going to the beach with me. And it’s always hard for me to decide if I want to take pictures or go surf and it works out because she takes the pictures for me.

HC: What’s your favorite thing about Christmas?

JV: It sounds cliche but just spending time with family since everyone can’t always be together during the year. It’s just nice being able to go to someone’s house and have all those good vibes being together and enjoying each others company. I’ve been blessed with cool family. And also the winter time because the waves are good.

HC: What is the best thing you could recieve for Christmas?

JV: Either a new camera or a new surfboard.
