“Golden Hour Faded Black” Reviewing Kacey Musgraves’ New Album: Star-Crossed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

Ever since Kacey Musgraves divorced singer and songwriter, Ruston Kelly, in 2020, fans have been desperately waiting for Musgraves to release personable music about the loss of her divorce. The divorce left many followers of Musgraves, including myself, heavily confused since her award winning album Golden Hour expressed the intimate feelings she felt while falling in love with her ex-husband. Songs like “Butterflies,” “Velvet Elvis,” and “Love Is a Wild Thing” described the intense feelings of love and passion one might feel when they find “The One.” So when the news broke out that Musgraves’ new album Star-Crossed finally came out after a year of processing the divorce, fans couldn’t wait to hear the emotions the Musgraves went through when her love for Kelly hit the rocks.

I loved this album and enjoyed that Musgraves explored new instruments in her music, even adding a spanish song! I will be exploring my top 5 songs from the album and explaining why I loved them.

5. “Justified”

This song explores the sentiment one can go through when breaking it off with someone they love. After trying so hard to make things work, Musgraves eventually feels that she should be justified to be with other people. I think these emotions aren’t explored enough in today’s society so I love that Musgraves took the step to be honest! (GO KACEYYY)

4. “Breadwinner”

This has to be one of the best girl anthems I’ve heard in A WHILE. Musgraves talks about how insecure some guys can be these days! Sometimes men can’t handle a successful woman and we need to accept that and move on.

3. “Camera Roll”

The way this song makes me cry… A lot of people can relate to looking back at old photos they took with a former boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner and realizing all the hurt that can cause. You remember all the good times which makes it even harder to let go of that past relationship.

2. “Cherry Blossom”

I love the Japanese influence on this song! This song sounds so different from Musgraves’ country influence, showing how much her range has grown over the years! I love the lyric, “I’m your cherry blossom baby, I’ll never float away,” representing the love she might have for someone. I just think this song is so clever and fun!

1. “Simple Times”

The NOSTALGIA this song brings me! Musgraves talks about how easy and fun life was when we were younger and as we grow older, we realize how easy life was during our simple days. Growing up is hard and sometimes we just want to get away, but we can’t. I love reminiscing on my childhood with Musgraves during this song, it’s truly a BOP.

It’s no question that Kacey Musgraves’ new album Star-Crossed is a total turnaround from her romantic album Golden Hour released in 2018. But that makes the album all the better. Sometimes love doesn’t last and I’m happy that Musgraves embraced those feelings and put her all into this album. Go listen!
