The Challenge of Staying Productive Before Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

If you’re like me, then you are probably counting down the days until summer starts. In just a few weeks I will have the freedom of being able to lie in bed for as long as I like and stay up until the early hours of the morning reading books and binge watching Netflix. Running on my own schedule with little commitment is one of my favourite things. No longer will my nights be filled with studying and writing essays, but instead I’ll be hanging out with my friends and snuggling with my dog not having to worry about deadlines. But until this bliss comes along I have to continue working hard in what I think are the busiest weeks of the whole semester and can be the hardest to be productive in.

Maybe it’s just me but the last few weeks of the semester always seem to have the most tests, quizzes, papers, and presentations due. Not to mention one of the most dreaded words by students: finals. So instead of beginning to wind down from the end of a very busy school year, it seems that I need to ‘wind up’ and find my drive to push through the last few weeks. Which in all honesty can be difficult when the beginning of summer is in sight and the tiredness starts to creep up on you. What’s more, when the weather starts to get hot and the flip flops come out, it makes it that bit harder to work and not walk to your car to drive to the beach.

Don’t get me wrong, in some ways I enjoy the last few weeks of the semester. I like being able to tie up all of the loose ends in my classes and I like the excitement and promise that summer brings. To be able to see all my hard work and the hours I’ve spent late into the night become a final product and achievement is something that I really enjoy. I am also excited to start a new year in the fall, join new clubs, meet more people, and make more friends. Yet despite feeling like this, I still have times when I find it difficult to get that drive to write that last essay, to research information for that last project, and to go to the final classes. When I feel like this I like to ask myself a couple of questions, and I would like to share them with you. If you too feel this way, I hope you know that the majority of people in college and high school also feel this way. It is difficult but it is so worth it.

  1. Why give up and not put in as much effort as you did in the beginning, when you’ve come this far in the semester?
  2. Am I going to regret this decision?
  3. Why am I paying so much money to go to college if I’m not putting the effort in to do the work?

Whatever you may be feeling, just keep in mind that summer is so close and you can do whatever you want in just a few weeks. We deserve to do it for ourselves, to continue working with the same or even a better work ethic.
