This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

As the new year begins a lot of people tend to have resolutions that they hope to accomplish throughout the year. I am sure you know the typical ones such as going to the gym, eating healthier, and save more money. For me, I have decided to try to obtain more knowledge and learn from others. How am I going to do this you ask? I want to start reading more books that overall have a lesson of some sort in them.

Reading for fun in college is so difficult. I am constantly reading my textbooks for class, rereading my 10 page long essays, or reading Her Campus articles. However, I have decided to prioritize my reading more and more. Over the course of 2018 I would randomly screen shots books that caught my attention on social media. Here is the list of books I hope to have completed by the end of 2019

How to be Alone by Lane Moore

Price: $13.04 / paperback

Genre: Humor, Biography, Autobiography

Why I picked it: This is one of those books that keeps popping up all over my Instagram feed being recommended by stand out people I trust.

The Sparkle Effect by Kristen Dalton Wolfe

Price: $13.49 / paperback

Genre: Self-help book, Christian literature

Why I picked it: In the past I have done pageants and competed within the Miss USA system so naturally I need to read a self help book by a former Miss USA who I have looked up to for years.

Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis

Price: $13.79 / hardcover

Genre: Christian literature

Why I picked it: This book has great reviews online discussing how it will provide the reader with tools to better their life and, at this point, I am open to try anything.

Becoming by Michelle Obama

Price: $19.50 / hardcover

Genre: Autobiography, Biography, Memoir

Why I picked it: This is the book everyone seemed to be talking about at the end of 2018 and it could not stay on the book shelves! I feel as though this is a must read simply due to understanding hardships and the experiences that arose from them.

Be Fearless: 5 Principles for a Life of Breakthroughs and Purpose by Jean Case

Price: $16.35 / hardcover

Genre: Self-help book

Why I picked it: Be Fearless provides its readers with the tools that it requires to actually be fearless and take on the world with a strong sense of self.

My Story by Elizabeth Smart

Price: $15.75 / paperback

Genre: Biography, Autobiography, True crime

Why I picked it: The Elizabeth Smart true crime case is one of those I have learned about in several different points in my life. I can not possibly think of a better way to learn more than from her directly.

Kind Is the New Classy: The Power of Living Graciously by Candace Cameron Bure

Price: $14.34 / paperback

Genre: Biography, Christian literature

Why I picked it: Based on reviews, Bure shares her personal life experiences and discusses all about living in today’s society in a way that works best for you.

Educated by Tara Westover

Price: $16.80 / hardcover

Genre: Biography, Autobiography

Why I picked it: Educated is described as a memoir of a girl who persevered through a difficult family life to earn her PhD and the struggles she faced while trying to get there.

I Wish My Teacher Knew: How One Question Can Change Everything for Our Kids by Kyle Schwartz

Price: $17.99 / hardcover

Genre: Education, Nonfiction

Why I picked it: As an Education major, I have worked alongside many teachers. Many of which have mentioned this book assuming I have already read it, so here it is.

I feel as though this list of books represents my goals for 2019. I want to focus on myself by being inspired by those who have successfully made it through hard times and I also want to enjoy reading more books that involve my passion of teaching. Am I positive that all of these books will leave a lasting impact on me? No, I am not. There is honestly a high chance that I will only make it through half a book or two before I move on to a new one. These are the books I think I need in my life, but I will have to see where the end of 2019 leaves me.

I am positive I will end up with more books than are on this list and I hope that is true.
