6 Songs You Should be Listening to Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Lutheran chapter.

In a time of midterms, family visits, and with Thanksgiving just a month away, we all need some tunes to survive the late-night breakdowns and the endless hours spent in a silent library. In these times, I turn to music for a break, even if it’s just 3 short minutes. Here are the 6 songs you should be listening to right now, to let loose, to relax, or to get motivated:

1. “Setting the World on Fire” (feat. P!nk) -Kenny Chesney  Chesney’s new album, “Cosmic Hallelujah” is out this week on iTunes, and this rock/country ballad featuring P!nk is number 3 on the track list. It’s the jam for that break you need to get in all the feels you’ve been suppressing, then continue that 8-page paper with a little more purpose. I mean the song does say “we were up all night, and we’re feeling so good!”.

2. “The Little Things” (feat. Angela McClusky)- Big Gigantic   You know that philosophy exam you have next week, that no amount of studying could ever prepare you for? I’ve got a song for that! Pump this techno rock jam 10 minutes before the test, and you will have yourself convinced you can pass the MCAT on the spot. Get pumped, get focused and get confident with this hot hit.

3. “Holy War”– Alicia Keys  Not to get political, but there is an election a week away, and a nasty one at that. This catchy and inspiring Alicia song is a good reminder of the peace and light in the world we still have and still want. It’s a feel-good song with meaningful lyrics, and is a perfect reminder of the calming power of music.

4. “Jolene” (feat. Dolly Parton)- Pentatonix This is a quirky track for a certain taste, but is worth the listen. It’s ironic that Dolly Parton is featured because it is her song originally, but this fresh take on it, in an acapella format, will make you smile.

5. “She Sets the City on Fire”– Gavin DeGraw To me, any Gavin DeGraw song just equals happiness. This song is no exception, and the acoustic version is perfect for that easy listening song you are craving. (Tip: I like to pretend he is singing about me, it just makes it even happier)

6. “Closer” (feat. Halsey)- The Chainsmokers Although this song is probably already on your playlist, this is a reminder to blast it whenever you can. In the car, in the shower, with your friends, and as many times as humanly possible. This is the song of the semester, and with a bass drop like that, it is THE song to jam to.
