Pumpkin Flavored Products & Treats

The sudden abundance of flannel, boots and hot coffees around campus can only mean one thing: Autumn is here in Charleston.  Although we may not be privileged enough to enjoy classic fall foliage or days cold enough to actually wear that new chunky knit sweater without finding yourself sweating by 2 p.m., fall is arguably the most enjoyable season here in the low country.  Most days, the crisp morning air gives way to sunny afternoons, and luckily the horrid summertime humidity is far behind us.

Every change of seasons brings about new trends and flavors, and fall is no exception.  Pumpkin-flavored everything seems to be popping up this season.  Here’s a quick rundown of some different pumpkin-inspired treats to try this autumn season.

Pumpkin Coffee

This year, Starbuck’s infamous Pumpkin Spice Latte (affectionately known as “PSL” to regulars) celebrates its 10th anniversary.  Last year, the latte was so popular that there were reports of franchises across the nation running out of the drink mix before the fall season was even underway.  But one doesn’t have to go to Starbucks to enjoy a great pumpkin-flavored coffee creation.  Many other national brands have followed suit, and you can now get pumpkin-flavored K-cups, syrups, and sweeteners.

The interior of Bakehouse

Where does one go to find the best pumpkin creation in town?  I asked Junior Meghan Masuis, a coffee aficionado, about her opinion on the Holy City’s best pumpkin coffee creation.  She pointed me to Bakehouse, on East Bay Street.  This sunny, quaint coffee shop serves up a Salted Pumpkin Spice Latte that is addictively delicious.

Pumpkin Doughnuts

Head on over to Dunkin’ Donunts this season to try their pumpkin muffin or glazed doughnut.  Take it from a New England girl (me), no other chain can do a doughnut better than Dunkin’s.  Sorry Krispy Kream!

Pumpkin Beer

If you’re over 21 and feeling adventurous, try one of this season’s new pumpkin-inspired brews.  Smaller craft breweries are “hop”ping on the pumpkin bandwagon, rolling out ales perfect for the fall season.  Try Dogfish Head’s popular Pumpkin Ale, or Shock Top’s Pumpkin Wheat.  Even if you’re not usually a fan of beer, you may find yourself surprised by the sweet and spicy flavors found in many pumpkin brews.

And of course… Pumpkins!

There’s no way to better announce fall’s arrival than by a visit to a pumpkin patch.  Head north on Route 17 to pick your own pumpkins at Boone Hall Plantation.  The entire location a beautiful place to spend an autumn afternoon.  Once you have your pumpkin, spend the rest of the day getting lost in their corn maze, or touring the historic Boone Hall.
