Breaking Bad Habits: How to Conquer Yourself

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

Often times, your own worst enemy is yourself. Our bad habits or specific ways of thinking do not truly disappear without effort on our part. They linger around and it is up to us to learn to control them. We strive for good habits, but sometimes they seem impossible to grasp. Plato said, “The first and best victory is to conquer self.” This is true, but in order to succeed one must have discipline. Self-discipline is a channel through which one attains success, triumph, and true accomplishment.

Habits and self-discipline go hand in hand. One cannot be achieved without the other. Habits are what make us who we are. In order to do well these habits must help us stay focused. Bad habits on the other hand can lead to setbacks and downward spirals.

Whether you want to practice controlled spending, efficient study habits, a healthier lifestyle, or learn and explore a new talent, you will find yourself well on the way to becoming a changed person. Just take a personal challenge and commit yourself, to yourself! This soul searching time period will be different for everyone. You are so much stronger than you think you are!
