Why you need blue light glasses (and fast!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

I don’t know about you guys, but it seems like blue light glasses are all the rage right now! As college students, we are constantly exposed to blue light when watching Netflix late at night or reading and writing countless essays and articles.

Blue light is the portion of the visible light spectrum with the shortest wavelengths and with the highest energy. Blue light passes through all protective structures in the eye and it reaches the retina, which increases the risk of macular degeneration and digital eye strain in addition to messing with your body’s sleep and wake cycle. (BOO!) As young adults, we are constantly exposed to blue light from computer screens, mobile phones, tablets and ambient lighting. Some side effects of blue light exposure include headaches and loss of sleep via melatonin.

So what can you do about this? You can get Blue Light Glasses! Blue light lenses filter out blue light by blocking the transmission of a specific segment or range of wavelengths. The lenses are designed to help reduce digital eye strain and avoid disrupting your circadian rhythm cycle (yay! more sleep!). These glasses provide people with great health benefits and they are super cute. Sounds like a win-win!

On average, humans spend around eleven hours in front of screens. Even if you don’t feel like you spend this much time in front of a screen, it still may be a good idea to look into some blue light protecting glasses!

The Strategist- New York Magazine released their list of the top blue light glasses being sold on amazon. The glasses range from $15-$60. Some of the top brands include Gamma Ray, Prospek, LifeArt, and J+S Vision. If blue light glasses can prevent eye strain, headaches, help you to get more sleep and look cute at the same time, why not order a pair ;)
