It’s 2023, your typical celebrity obsession is no longer the hot new actor, actress, or singer you like. Now it’s a social media influencer. Social media and content creation has evolved from media platforms from Youtube and Vine, to Instagram and TikTok. Not only are these content creators influencing viewers on specific products, some creators like to showcase their fun personalities, and make you feel like you know them personally. For example, Alix Earle blew up overnight for her “Get Ready With Me” TikToks where she talked about her experience as a student at the University of Miami, partying at nightclubs, her ongoing struggle with acne, etc. Ultimately, she makes you feel like you are on FaceTime with your best friend that you’ve known since pre-school. That’s what’s to love about social media influencers: it feels like you’ve known each other forever, even though you’ve never actually met. While social media definitely has its negative side effects, there are so many interesting, funny people on TikTok that offer comedic relief and enjoyment for its viewers.

Someone that I recently started following is British influencer, Madeline Argy. She has over 4 million followers, and is known for telling random, fast-paced, absolutely hilarious, and unhinged stories about her life. Argy started posting TikToks in March of 2021, starting with  lip-synching videos, and transitioning to funny storytime videos.

Argy has recently signed to the Unwell Network, a production agency founded by Call Her Daddy’s Alexandra Cooper, and her fiancé, Matt Kaplan. She is launching her podcast, Pretty Lonesome, on October 2nd through Spotify. Although I had vaguely heard of her before, I had not seen  or heard her speak until she was a guest on the Call Her Daddy podcast. I was laughing so hard that my stomach started to hurt.

There’s one particular part of the episode where Cooper and Argy are sitting on the steps of a brownstone in New York City. Alex steps out of the podcast to get a hot dog, and Madeline unpromptedly starts to tell a story to the camera about how one day she was having a crisis and impulsively decided to shave her head. She continues to say that she had a fixation about going into the ocean, putting her head in sand, and putting her head in the ocean. She said that her partner at the time broke up with her because she shaved her head, and she was too depressed to go to the ocean. At another point in the episode, she randomly mentioned to Cooper how she got her nipple pierced at a sketchy place, it got severely infected, and she never got it treated. Argy said that it was a 6/10 on the scale of most difficult parts of her life.

Madeline Argy is also facing media attention for her recent breakup with British rapper, Central Cee. They were together for two years, and there was quite a lot of speculation about their relationship being a PR stunt. She has confirmed, though, that this is not true.

After I watched Argy’s interview with Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy, I was extremely entertained (which is an understatement), and I spent the next hour and a half laughing at her TikToks. She truly does make it feel like I’m on FaceTime with my best friend telling me a funny story about her day. I’m so excited for Madeline’s podcast to come out, and see what is in store for her!
