What Products to Use for Your Hair Type

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Walking into the store to buy your hair products can be a little overwhelming; especially since there are so many different types of products and brands out there. However, choosing the right products or even brand for your hair can do just the difference in making your hair more healthy. Everyone loves to spend the least amount of money on their hair products, but your hair is something that needs to be taken good care of.  I am not just talking about shampoos and conditioners, but also styling and heat protective products. Every time you straighten your hair, you are damaging it, which is why it is important to become aware of the products out there that can help protect your hair. You especially need to take better care if you have thick hair and/or have any sort of hair treatment.

If you have damaged hair:If you have damaged hair, you may need to start spending just a little bit more money to mend those dead ends. Most of these products can be found under the salon or professional hair products. A very popular brand, “Kérastase” has been known for enriching and curing your hair. Kérastase has been rated by the professionals and be found in the top salons. It is a pricy shampoo, but it is worth it.  If your hair really needs some more treatment, I would suggest buying a conditioner masque. This comes in a smaller circular container, in which you only apply just a small amount to your ends.

Other Recommendations: L’Oréal Paris Professional Products

If you have Medium-thick, wavy hair:Having more hair means that your hair can absorb more water than other types of hair. This means our hair is more prone to getting frizzy in humid climates and having split ends in dry ones.In this case, you want to try to buy shampoos and conditioners that are for “thick to thin” hair or “from frizzy to smooth.” You can find these products at your local drug store, as cheap at $7.00.

Recommendations:TRESemmé, Pantene, L’Oréal, John Frieda and Organix

If you have color treated hair:“Color’s worst enemy is water,” says New York City hair colorist Ruth Roche.  A huge percentage of color fade is due to water alone. This is why it is important to buy specific shampoo and conditioner for your color treated hair. Using the wrong products can be one of the reasons why your hair color may turn into a different color, or becomes more brittle or dry. The difference between the products is that the color protecting products are more gentle and protective, also using less salt.

Recommendations: Matrix-Biolage, Redken, TRESemmé, L’Oréal, Pureology

If you have Keratin/Brazilian treatment:If you have the Keratin or the Brazilian blow out treatment it is extremely important to use the sulfate-free shampoos. Using products like Garnier Fructis will completely damage your hair and shorten the length of your treatment. The sulfate-free shampoos will help maintain the duration of your treatment. If you are looking for the cheapest sulfate-free shampoo, the L’Orêal Sulfate-Free brands are as low as $6 dollars, and it is one of my favorites. Another are the Organix selected products.

Recommendations: L’Oréal, Matrix, Organix, Pureology

Style Products:

Thick, Wavy or Damaged Hair:

Argan Oil or Moroccan Oil: This oil is an incredible natural sunscreen, heat protectant and a repair treatment. If you are looking for a multipurpose natural hair product, this is something you should try out. It improves dry, brittle, or even frizzy hair, making your hair softer and manageable.  For best results, apply when hair is damp!

Recommendations: Moroccan Oil Brand, Organix, Garnier, L’Oréal

If you straighten your hair:

If you straighten your hair, it is extremely important to apply a bit of spray before you begin straightening. This will help you from getting split ends, and will prevent your hair from looking dead due to the constant frying of your hair.

Recommendations: CHI, Kérastase, TRESemmé, Frizz-Ea

For thin hair:

If you have thin hair, you do not need to worry as much. People with thin hair often strive to have thicker hair. If this is the case, you could try using some volumizers.

Recommendations: Aussie Aussome Volume Spray, Redken thickening lotion, Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Solutions Root Lifter Spray
