“And the winner of this year’s best new artist is”…

The Oscars started off this award show season with quite a bang, with some controversy and surprises that no one was expecting. This past week was the Grammys, a.k.a. music’s biggest night! So much occurred, from touching tributes, amazing performances, and unexpected wins/losses. Let’s do a quick recap of what occured at the 2022 Grammys:

Sparkle, sass, and looks that last:

The red carpet was shining with artists that glistened like the stars. Glitter seemed to be a popular addition to many of the night’s evening attire. To name a few of my favorites, Doja Cat sparkled in a sea-foam silhouette inspired by the one and only Marilyn Monroe. Lil Nas radiated on the carpet with his pearl studded suit, along with Jack Harlow (soon to perform at Bucknell!) who wore a sleek black suit. Olivia Rodrigo went for y2k mixed with glamour in a tight, black and purple dress and long black gloves. There were plenty of amazing outfits but those are just a few.

A fresh, funky (and funny) host:

Trevor Noah, comedian and host of The Daily Show, hosted this year’s Grammys. The Recording Academy loved him so much as a host previously, that they asked him to return. Noah brought laughter and fun with him. The most memorable joke of his night was at the very beginning, when he called out Will Smith for his controversial moment at this year’s Oscars, stating “we will be listening to music, dancing, singing, keeping people’s names out of our mouths…”.

Silk Sonic’s smooth sweep:

To say Silk Sonic was my favorite part of the award show is an understatement: For me, they made the show. They swept the awards, winning four awards including record of the year. The best part about them, other than their awesome performance, was their reactions to their wins. They would smoothly slide their hands up and begin to dance their way up to the stage each time their name was called. If only you could have seen my reaction (the laughter was too much).

A Uniting tribute for Ukraine:

Throughout the night, there were multiple tributes, including Lady Gaga performing for Tony Bennett, a tribute for other artists lost this past year, and one for Taylor Hawkins, who we lost just a few weeks ago. The one of most prominence had to be the tribute to Ukraine. Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressed the current battle taking place and asked for support in any ways possible. The tribute moved to performances by Ukranian artists that recently left their country to find peace and safety.

Billie bangs out a rock performance:

Billie Eilish performed with her brother Finneas at the award show. She sang her newest popular song Happier Than Ever and absolutely killed it on the stage. Eilish belted her heart out, which is quite different from her prior performances, where she shows off the soft side of her voice. Her performance was low-key but amazing all in one. She wore a t-shirt that displayed Taylor Hawkins and rocked the stage.

Doja Cat’s Dash to the stage:

Doja Cat and SZA won an award for best pop-duo performance, and something quite unexpected occurred: Doja Cat had to nearly sprint to the stage after almost not being there to accept her award. She had to rush to the bathroom, not realizing that she was about to make a speech. It led to some laughter and fun spirits, merely adding to the already exciting night!

There were so many fun and unexpected occurrences at the 2022 Grammys, but now that our little recap is done, it’s time to look forward to the new music, artists, and nominations to come for the 2023 Grammys!
