Springtime at Bucknell

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

There is nothing like springtime at Bucknell.  The sundresses we purchased at the end of the summer finally emerge from the deepest crevices of our closets, paired with sandals and shades that have not seen sunlight since Homecoming Weekend.  The all-around mood on campus transforms from one of dreariness and laziness to one of excitement and eagerness – we can finally spend time outside! Suddenly, a whole new side of Lewisburg is opened up to us, one that we turned our backs on in the cold, snowy months.  It’s amazing how much Lewisburg has to offer that we don’t notice when cooped up inside during the winter months for warmth.  During these upcoming weeks of sun, take advantage of Bucknell’s best months – here’s a list to guide you.

First and foremost, The Lewisburg Freez:  How could anyone not love this place?  It is an absolute must.  Open only from March to September, The Freez should be visited as often as possible. The menu offers a wide variety of sweet treats — from milkshakes and slushies to floats and sundaes, there’s something for every sweet tooth. Obviously, we can’t forget about the delicious Freez, in all of its possible variations. Another plus: the Freez is walking distance from school, and the prices are totally reasonable.

Picnic at Hufnagle Park:  One of the most beautiful places along Market Street is Hufnagle Park.  The quaint, grassy land has an enchanted feel, with its charming gazebo and old-fashioned lampposts.  Grab takeout from a nearby eatery and relax in the shade, or catch some rays on a park bench. You simply can’t go wrong.

Run/Exercise Outside: Skip the gym.  Take a run outside instead, and observe the beautiful world around you.  Also, running actual distances on land is a better workout than running in place on a treadmill.

Hike:  The Buffalo Valley Rail Trail is the result of investment by the Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority, Union County, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Federal Highway Department.  The trail runs between Lewisburg and Mifflinburg, and is about 9 miles in length.  Take a walk down the trail and explore all that Central Pennsylvania has to offer.

Eat at The Fence:  On the other side of the river is an old-fashioned, drive-in restaurant called The Fence.  The menu offers classic and affordable fast-food such as burgers, hot dogs, and fries, but The Fence is most famous for their fish sandwich.  Picnic benches line the river, giving you the option to either sit outside and soak up the sun, or get cozy in your car and have the waitresses deliver right to your window.  Sitting along the Susquehanna eating a 2-dollar fish sandwich is the definition of a perfect day in Lewisburg.

Lewisburg Festival of the Arts:  This festival only happens once a year, so grab at the chance to be culturally immersed in the arts of Lewisburg.  The Arts Festival is a day-long event bustling with people, offering an array of food, art, and entertainment along Market Street.

We only have seven weeks left in this spring semester.  This is the time to relish in Lewisburg’s unique, affordable, and beautiful offerings. Bucknell in springtime should be enjoyed outside! So get out there, Bucknellians.

After serving as Campus Correspondent at Bucknell University, she is so excited to continue being a part of the Her Campus team! Besides traversing the city and trying to figure out what being a "real person" really means, Sarah loves long walks on the beach, sipping pina coladas, and getting caught in the rain (kidding!). Real favorites include traveling, writing, kickboxing, and making up ridiculous lyrics to the latest songs. She absolutely loves anything that involves cupcakes, butterflies, glitter, and anything Parisian and specializes in baking with far too much chocolate and obsessively watching shows bound to be cancelled after the first season. Though the long term path for this post-grad collegiette remains unclear, she's looking forward to all the new 20-something adventures that await her!
