  • Class—Such a tough one! I’ve taken so many great classes at Bucknell, but I’d have to say Sociology 100 with Professor Abowitz.
  • Thing from Bucknell—The people. I love not being able to go anywhere without running into at least two people I know.
  • Drink from 7th Street—A large regular coffee.

Give us 4 Fun facts about yourself!

  1. I was a Conference Champion racewalker in high school—I could walk an 8:27 mile back in the day! (Yes, racewalking is a real Olympic sport.)
  2. I am addicted to shopping. I always know when Bloomingdales and J. Crew are having a sale!
  3. My guilty obsession is The Real Housewives… of every city.
  4. I love anything pink.

As the president of BSG, what are your primary responsibilities?

As BSG President, I was elected by my peers to accurately represent the student body. My executive board and I interact with University administration, faculty, student organizations, and alumni on a daily basis. It is my primary responsibility to ensure that the policies these groups implement are just and beneficial for current Bucknellians. On a more day-to-day basis, with the help of my incredible Executive Board, I am responsible for making sure that our class congresses and internal committees continue to present exciting new initiatives and continue to represent the student body, as well.

Why did you want to take on this position?

Serving as BSG President is not always glamorous, but I ran for this position because I am extremely passionate about our University and our student body. My work is really enjoyable and self-rewarding, and I wouldn’t give it up for the world. We are so fortunate to attend a school where the administration and faculty truly do care about our ideas, and I want to  make sure that our voices are heard. I also know that BSG has great potential to better student life, and I hope to lead my Congress in carrying out initiatives this year to improve our Bucknell experience.

Is there anything you feel is misunderstood about BSG or that you are working to improve?

There are so many things that I feel are misunderstood about BSG. First of all, I would like to make it clear that BSG is a serious commitment. My executive board and I spend over 25 hours each week meeting with various administration, faculty members, and students to voice the opinions of the student body. Every single elected representative in BSG strives to improve our Bucknell community and the experience that their classes enjoy. We, as an organization, also have done a lot more than the study body thinks. We recognize and fund all student organizations and spearhead the Collegiate Readership Program that brings the Financial Times, USA Today, and New York Times (now, also online!) to Bucknell. Past administrations brought Zip Cars to campus, supported the introduction of LaundryView, and partnered with downtown stores and restaurants so that BUIDs are accepted at many locations on Market Street. Without BSG, so many programs on campus that we, as a student body, take for granted would not exist.

What do we have to look forward to this semester from BSG?

While I don’t want to make too many promises, I can tell you that BSG is working diligently to improve the efficiency of our organization. We conducted an internal assessment of our organization, and we are experimenting with new ways to better serve our student body and carry out initiatives that our peers really care about. We hope to better publicize campus events through our newly purchased LCD screens in the LC Mall and by getting more creative with our publicity events. For example, we gave away free drinks to celebrate the opening of the new squash courts, and have created a new relationship with the Athletics Department to help promote their events. We created a YouTube video with the basketball team and will be giving out rally towels at the game against Holy Cross. We have a website that will be launching soon to make it easier for our student body to stay informed, in addition to creating a new “BSG Brief” that will be placed in the Mail Room each week. Some initiatives we are working on this semester include finally bringing froyo to campus, getting the vending machines to accept BUIDs, and creating an online syllabi bank in cooperation with the faculty. If you have any ideas, please feel free to share them with us. Stay tuned…

What other activities do you do on campus?

Aside from BSG, I am a Presidential Fellow on campus, and I work with the Institute for Leadership in Technology and Management (ILTM) program. I’m also a copy editor for Her Campus (HCXO!), Treasurer of Chi Omega, and a student member on the Bucknell Alumni Association’s Board of Directors.

What are you looking to do this summer?

I just received an offer from Barclays for their Generation Next Sophomore Investment Banking Program! This is an amazing opportunity, and I am really grateful for all of the help and advice I have received from Bucknell students, faculty, and alumni. I am really excited to learn more about the industry and break into the world of finance. Aside from Wall Street, I look forward to spending time with my high school friends and family. I am a huge fan of the beach, so I’m also really looking forward to warm weather and the opening of Long Island’s beach clubs on Memorial Day.

What are you looking to do postgraduation?

I don’t even want to think about leaving Bucknell. As of now, I am hoping to pursue a career on Wall Street after graduation. I hope to land a job that challenges me everyday and allows for life-long learning. For this reason, I am currently interested in investment banking, as it is an exciting field that is always changing. However, I could also see myself in law school in the distant future. Regardless of what path I ultimately follow, I know that my role as BSG President will certainly contribute to my success. It has been the best preparation for a real job after college than anything else I think I could have done at Bucknell. My future is somewhat uncertain, but that is what makes life exciting.

Elizabeth is a senior at Bucknell University, majoring in English and Spanish. She was born and raised in Northern New Jersey, always with hopes of one day pursuing a career as a journalist. She worked for her high school paper and continues to work on Bucknell’s The Bucknellian as a senior writer. She has fervor for frosting, creamy delights, and all things baking, an affinity for classic rock music, is a collector of bumper stickers and postcards, and is addicted to Zoey Deschanel in New Girl. Elizabeth loves anything coffee flavored, the Spanish language, and the perfect snowfall. Her weakness? Brunch. See more of her work at www.elizabethbacharach.wordpress.com
Sarah Dubow graduated from school in 2013 and is a Digital Strategist at Marina Maher Communications in New York City. After serving as Campus Correspondent at Bucknell University, she is so excited to continue being a part of the Her Campus team! Besides traversing the city and trying to figure out what being a "real person" really means, Sarah loves long walks on the beach, sipping pina coladas, and getting caught in the rain (kidding!). Real favorites include traveling, writing, kickboxing, and making up ridiculous lyrics to the latest songs. She absolutely loves anything that involves cupcakes, butterflies, glitter, and anything Parisian and specializes in baking with far too much chocolate and obsessively watching shows bound to be cancelled after the first season. Though the long term path for this post-grad collegiette remains unclear, she's looking forward to all the new 20-something adventures that await her!
