Here’s What Happened at the Grammys (In Case You Missed It)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

The 2021 Grammy Awards were full of fun performances, peculiar fashion statements, and (of course) lots of big stars getting big awards. In case you missed it, here’s a recap of everything that happened at the Grammys: the controversy, fun, fashion, and more!

The Pop Princesses Swept the Awards

With so many talented women nominated this year at the Grammys, we all knew there would be some big winners. But what wasn’t quite as expected was that there were several records broken on Sunday night by female artists. Not only did Beyoncé break the record for most Grammys by a female artist after winning her 28th Grammy, but Taylor Swift also broke the record of the most wins for ‘album of the year’ after receiving it for ‘Folklore.’ Many other women won awards as well, including Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, and H.E.R. The pop singers definitely swept the awards.

Fun with Fashion

There were tons of stunning outfits worn at the Grammys on Sunday night including, but not limited to, Dua Lipa’s Versace gown that definitely levitated her style game. And can we talk about Taylor Swift’s Oscar de la Renta dress? The flower embroidered dress and matching mask had me singing to her music for days.

Now or the fun part: let’s talk about what on earth Harry Styles decided to wear. Now as much as I love a good feather boa, mixing it with a plaid yellow jacket like Cher’s in the movie Clueless, as well as a funky striped sweater vest from Gucci, just made his outfit scream ‘I’m attending the premier of an early 2000s Disney Channel Movie.’ Even Ashley Tisdale made the comparison to herself. Though this outfit wasn’t a favorite out of the group, Harry did redeem himself with his performance ‘fit where he wore a full black leather Gucci suit and accessorized with a feather green boa.

Lizzo’s Loose Lips

Lizzo was one of the presenters at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards and boy was she excited. She was so excited that she accidentally slipped up on her speech saying “B*** I’m back!” After realizing what she said, her face said it all while she laughed it off.

John Mayer, is that you?

One of the biggest subtle surprises of the night occurred during Marren Morris’ performance of her song ‘The Bones.’ While she was singing, there was another well known musician accompanying her on guitar. Who was it you may ask? Well, Mr. John Mayer to be exact. Many viewers were extremely confused by his appearance but went along with it for the sake of the performance.

HAIM Have a Blast

Many have not heard of the rock group HAIM, but let’s just say they blew it out of the park with their performance of ‘The Steps.’ The trio of sisters helped open the show with their set that occurred between Harry Styles and Billie Eilish. Though they got snubbed of a Grammy, they still pulled their part in their performance as well as their ability to have fun. They even fan-girled over their friend Taylor Swift backstage during the show.

Megan and Cardi’s Controversial Performance

On Sunday night, Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B performed their chart topping collaboration W.A.P. which led to quite divided opinions over the performance. Though some enjoyed hearing the song on their televisions, most didn’t. There were many complaints on the provocativeness of the song as well as the dance. Besides that, Megan Thee Stallion did earn her some Grammys, one of them being for ‘Best New Artist.’

Performances, Performances

Besides Cardi and Megan’s performance, there were several memorable performances at the 2021 Grammys. Who could forget Taylor’s ‘Folklore’ medley, or Dua’s ‘Future Nostalgia’ performances (with not one but three pink outfits). So many artists performed including HAIM, Billie, Harry, and even Bruno Mars. To watch any of their performances, just click here.

Overall, the 63rd annual Grammy Awards were full of fun performances, great style, and lots of things to talk about. If you didn’t watch it yet, you can view it on Paramount Plus or YouTube. Click here to see a full list of the Grammy winners.
