Fashion Forecast: October Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

I know that I’ve been saying throughout September how fall has taken over Lewisburg, but the arrival of October really signifies this special autumnal season. It’s the month of pumpkin carving, costume wearing, hay ride-going and, of course, the best fashion of the year! There’s nothing that can beat sipping an apple cider in your coziest cardigan, or admiring the scarecrows downtown in your favorite pair of leather boots and cargo jacket. Everything about fall is comforting, and that’s exactly how your wardrobe should feel this time of year. Here’s what Mother Nature will bring us the week of October 8 and the October essentials needed to keep you cool and casual this season:

Monday, Oct. 8
:
Partly cloudy and a high of 57 degrees. One of my go-to fall essentials is a nicely faded pair of blue jeans. I love skinny jeans and almost rarely wear flares since the straight-leg silhouette is perfect for tucking into boots or pairing with ballet flats. The faded denim color goes along perfectly with fall’s neutral colors, so put on your favorite pair and wear with a cream-colored sweater, tan flats, and colorful earrings for a pop of color.

Tuesday, Oct. 9: Sunny and a high of 60 degrees. Although I wish I wore them more than I do, something that seems classically autumnal is a worn-in leather belt. I have one of my dad’s old leather belts complete with a perfectly scuffed gold buckle in the middle that I like to pair with dresses or high-waisted skirts. To give this look a boho twist, pair the belt with a printed maxi dress, cardigan, and moccasins. You’ll look effortlessly chic and will be totally comfortable all day!

Wednesday, Oct. 10: Partly cloudy and a high of 60 degrees. Speaking of leather, any type of leather boot screams fall. A cute spin on the classic leather riding boot is a pair of leather cowgirl boots; they’re so versatile and totally adorable for day or night. I suggest pairing these boots with a pair of ripped jeans, a flowy knit sweater, and a fun headscarf or bandana to tie the western feel together. You’ll look cowgirl-chic without looking like your stepped out of the rodeo rink!

Thursday, Oct. 11: Sunny and a high of 60 degrees. I know I keep piggybacking, but something that always puts me in the fall vibe is flannel. I always try to make flannel look chic but can never seem to get it entirely right. However, the idea of pairing a flannel shirt with a long, button-down cardigan, dark jeans, and your favorite pair of flats to add a dressed-up spin to your favorite cozy essential.

Friday, Oct. 12: Partly cloudy and a high of 59 degrees. There’s nothing more comforting then putting on your favorite sweater once again. For me, it’s my mom’s old J.Crew cable-knit sweater with knotted buttons; for you, pairing your favorite all-time sweater with combat boots, a cargo jacket, and loads of necklaces and bracelets adds a punk vibe to your most comforting item in your closet.

For everyone at Bucknell, take the beginning of October to rejuvenate and relax over Fall Break (and of course, shop!). For those of you at other campuses, remember that these fall months aren’t here to stay forever, so make your fashion statements while you can! It’s all about being who you are, but knowing you have the potential for fashionable greatness is important to remember. Don’t “leaf” it out of your wardrobe!!
