I read somewhere recently that January can be considered the Sunday of months, and I could not be more in agreement with such a bold statement. The skies, despite our will to turn them otherwise, still follow a monotonous hue of gray and the temperature, unfortunately, is continuously bone chilling. Come the first week of February, you find yourself sunken with the “Winter Blues.” One way to revive your vibe? Fabulous nail polish!  If the sun won’t grace us with it’s warming presence, our nails will just have to do the trick!

I, myself, had quite the fetish for the gray hues of fall’s past and ceaselessly fight the urge to dip my nails into Essie’s infamous Chin Chilly and Power Clutch; but this Scott Naturals Water Color Nail Polish shade of periwinkle cleverly titled Morning Glory Fizz does a great job at combining the muted gray tones not only of past nail fads but of the never ending winter skies outside our window and peppy and warm future of spring around the corner!

Lena Dunham and her crazy cast of mistaken characters in “Girls” have taken us fabulously by storm and are back for more with Season 2. If you’re anything like me and cannot get enough of these utterly relatable characters, you must deck your nails in Deborah Lippman’s exclusive shades for the HBO comedy. It doesn’t matter if you stray towards Marnie’s light pink shade or classify more of a Jessa, feeling sultry in her practically drinkable burgundy, these new colors will surely remind your winter soul that life is solely lived “one mistake at time.”

Sometimes we all need a little indulgence—whether it is adding extra candy to your bag in the Bison or slipping into your PJS a tad too early on a Sunday night—to beat the blues.  So it’s perfectly apropos that Essie describes a new member of the winter collection as “an indulgent bright blue.” Butler Please will surely add a little pep in your step even when walking back in the ominous darkness and pure rawness of winter after a seemingly endless night at the library.

One definite positive of dreary winter is dark nail polish.  Don’t stop basking in the ability to teeter on the edge of gothic vision because before you know it, sunny days call for brightly painted nails. OPI’s newest shades, inspired by the movie “Skyfall,” are winter wondrous and not to mention Bond Girl bold (perfect for a passionate Valentine’s Day).  Try on the brash bold hue of Tomorrow Never Dies coupled with an English accent; not only will you boost your mood but your nails will also look ravishing grasping a martini glass.

You might not feel as good as gold, but this polish will definitely get you into the mindset and spirit.  New York City based salon, Ten Over Ten, introduces their new collection with colors named after downtown Manhattan streets. Not only will Worth’s rich gold hue make you feel fabulous, just glancing at your nails will break that Lewisburg bubble of winter blues; daydreaming about strutting the city streets in bright sunlight will become your new extracurricular.

Elizabeth is a senior at Bucknell University, majoring in English and Spanish. She was born and raised in Northern New Jersey, always with hopes of one day pursuing a career as a journalist. She worked for her high school paper and continues to work on Bucknell’s The Bucknellian as a senior writer. She has fervor for frosting, creamy delights, and all things baking, an affinity for classic rock music, is a collector of bumper stickers and postcards, and is addicted to Zoey Deschanel in New Girl. Elizabeth loves anything coffee flavored, the Spanish language, and the perfect snowfall. Her weakness? Brunch. See more of her work at www.elizabethbacharach.wordpress.com
Sarah Dubow graduated from school in 2013 and is a Digital Strategist at Marina Maher Communications in New York City. After serving as Campus Correspondent at Bucknell University, she is so excited to continue being a part of the Her Campus team! Besides traversing the city and trying to figure out what being a "real person" really means, Sarah loves long walks on the beach, sipping pina coladas, and getting caught in the rain (kidding!). Real favorites include traveling, writing, kickboxing, and making up ridiculous lyrics to the latest songs. She absolutely loves anything that involves cupcakes, butterflies, glitter, and anything Parisian and specializes in baking with far too much chocolate and obsessively watching shows bound to be cancelled after the first season. Though the long term path for this post-grad collegiette remains unclear, she's looking forward to all the new 20-something adventures that await her!  Â
