It’s funny what packing a semester’s worth of clothes can do to your opinions on this past year’s hottest trends. Did I really wear this “fashion sweatshirt” to class? you ask yourself as you pull a neon orange Adidas sweatshirt from your bottom drawer and throw it into your “leave at home” pile. And what about that turtleneck poncho you’ve worn every Saturday for a month? I’m tired of that, too! you say, folding it into your suitcase. By the time you’re done with your closet, it’s nearly empty – and you start to panic. What will you wear to class next semester?

Luckily, with the holiday season just around the corner (and, as expected, seasonal sales), it’s important to plan your New Year’s outfit picks according to 2016’s fashion climate. Here are seven of Her Campus Bucknell’s favorite new trends to look forward to in 2016:

That’s ‘70s Suede

Have you ever wondered where your mom got her super-retro suede leather vest (with the fringe) from? Next year, you don’t have to look very far – ‘70s style is back and is taking the new year’s trends by storm. If you’re trying not to break the bank, there are plenty of faux suede options out there, too, like this faux suede jacket from Zara.

The New White Tee

Runways are pointing to a new way to wear your plain white Oxford button-down next year. When scoping out the post-holiday sales rack, look for revamped white button-downs like this one from Forever 21.

Plenty of Pleats

Pleats are finally getting the positive recognition they deserve in 2016. Pants, blouses, and even rompers are getting the pleat treatment, adding a sophisticated look to all wardrobes next year. Paired with heels, this strapless romper is perfect for your New Year’s Eve bash.

Not Your Average Knits

Mesh sweaters are officially in for the new year. Perfect for winter or spring looks, knits can be paired with jeans, leggings, or even holiday skirts. Check out this one from Banana Republic.

Daytime Lingerie

In 2016, silky nighties and pajama tops won’t be just for sleeping anymore. Everyone’s favorite intimates – including slips, bralettes, and lingerie – will be next year’s top layering pieces. Dress slips like this one from Free People’s intimates collection will definitely be party-ready attire for New Year’s Eve.

The Half-moon Bag

Every year has its favorite bag shape (last year’s bucket bag, for example), and 2016 has got its eyes on the half-moon bag. Its sleek shape adds dimension to any day-to-day ensemble.  This orange suede bag from Urban Outfitters is the perfect addition to any ‘70s-inspired outfit.

The New Neck

Halter tops may have been 2015’s hottest formal attire trend, but next year, plan on upgrading this sophisticated neckline. Elle reports that high-end designers like Givenchy and Jason Wu are predicting that wrap front halter dresses will be everyone’s staple going out dress come 2016. If you’re dying to buy this trend before everyone else has, check out this plunge wrap front halter neck dress from Asos for just $37.62.
