I Skipped Class to go to Rhode Island. Here’s What I Did

Sometimes, I just need a break from Boston. I only have a few more days left in my sophomore year, but the days have started to feel longer and longer. My immediate family is from Georgia, and it is hard for me to make a productive weekend out of such a short trip home.

However, my closest extended family lives in Jamestown, Rhode Island. Their house has become my escape from the city, and somewhere I go for an amazing meal. My parents just so happened to visit this weekend to help move my brother out of his freshman year dorm at Northeastern University. This gave me the perfect opportunity to “play hooky” this past Friday!

I started my day in Brookline, then got an Uber to Back Bay Station. It was a little bit stressful at first, but fortunately, I got on my train at 9:32 a.m. The bustling MBTA is never a complaint; I had a smooth, hour-long ride to Providence. My parents were waiting for me so we could wander around.

Our first stop was the Providence Place Mall. Even though my mom is from Providence, we have been wanting to go to find some hidden treats for my cousins. We settled on Five Below and got some great pool floaties for the summer. After that, we drove to Newport.

The drive was fun, and I had a great time catching up with my parents. We went to the Red Parrot for lunch and had some great food, followed by even better shopping at local boutiques. What mattered most to me was the time I spent with my family. We talked about my life, the news, and everything in between.

After that, we drove to Jamestown to see my aunt and uncle. It had been a long day, and we were all happy to be at our home away from home, especially me. I had skipped school for this!

The bottom line is this: Sometimes we need a break, and it is totally okay!

College is hard; it’s okay to take a break sometimes.
