Time is a rare thing in college. Somedays, we barely have enough time to shower or get a few hours of zzz’s. So how are we supposed to justify spending, say, thirty minutes out of our very busy schedules walking to class? Unfortunately, some of us just have to get our bums up and make it a walk to remember. But that doesn’t mean we have to be unprepared. Here are 7 tips to help bring a bounce into your many steps!
-
Rooting For Your Route
As contradictory as it sounds, spending some time getting to know your walk will probably save you precious time later.

Time is Never on Your Side
It’s so easy to convince yourself you’re swimming in time. You never are! The elevator will always take longer than you think it will, somebody might just spill hot coffee all over you, and then you have to deal with those infuriatingly slow walkers. To save yourself stress, remember to give yourself extra time for the unexpected.
-
Coffee, Coffee, Coffee!
If it takes you a long time to get to class, then it will take you a long time to get from class. Instead of rushing back to your dorm in-between your classes, try staying in the same general area. Nearby coffee shops are usually great places to kick off your shoes (metaphorically, manners people) and relax. Plus, there’s coffee!
-
Pack Light
As college students, we are no strangers to textbooks. But lugging around those textbooks all day can only end with back problems and frowns. So what is an academician suppose to do? Unless the professor requests you bring a textbook or you want to read it in-between classes, leave the heavy books in your dorm. You also probably don’t need every binder or notebook you’ve ever owned.
-
Weather or Not
Boston’s weather is anything but consistent. One moment, you’re happily skipping around in your sundress and the next you’re modeling the eskimo look. While you want to pack light, you also want to be prepared. Check the weather report before you head to class. If there’s any chance of rain, snow, or other unpleasantries, pack the appropriate gear.
-
“T” Time
If you haven’t had enough coffee to deal with the walk, you’re late for class, or the weather outside is frightful, public transportation can be a good option. Just remember that mass transit can be affected by the weather, accidents, etc. just as easily as you are.

The Beat of Your Feet
Walking to class doesn’t just have to be about walking to class. Listening to music, checking your Facebook, or finally calling back your mom can make the time go faster (or slower, depending on what your mom feels like talking about).
All tips aside, your long walk to class can be a nice way to start your day and experience the city. Plus, you now have an excuse for not going to FitRec (talk about an added bonus)!
