How to Make Chocolate Healthy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

If you’re like me and have a mild addiction to chocolate, you understand how difficult it can be. Every day, your body feels like it needs chocolate to survive. Personally, I crave it all day and will have to eat some form of cocoa to satisfy my stomach.

The struggle is real for a college student like myself, who is a chocolate lover, but still doesn’t want to gain weight. I wondered the other day, “there has to be some way to make chocolate healthy for you, right?” I did some research and found a few alternatives to make this amazingly tasty treat into a somewhat healthy daily snack.

1. Healthy Foods…. Covered in Chocolate

Why didn’t I think of this before? It’s so simple. Combine healthy food with chocolate. Dip your favorite fruit into chocolate or drizzle your popcorn with a coating of cocoa. While it’s still not super healthy, popcorn (without any toppings) and fruit are the healthiest snacks. If you need a chocolate fix, feel less guilty by adding a touch of the sweet substance to your healthy foods.

2. Yogurt Parfaits

Simple: just buy chocolate flavored yogurt. Or, buy plain yogurt and add delicious toppings. Almonds, fruit, and chocolate shavings will give you that tasty but healthy satisfaction.

3. Dark Chocolate

It contains way less sugar and fat than milk chocolate. It also contains antioxidants, which help regulate stress levels. Buy a chocolate bar and eat a piece per day! It may actually be considered healthier for you than dessert…

4. Smoothies & Coffee

These are subtle options. There are plenty of breakfast or dessert smoothie recipes online that show how you can incorporate this sweet into a healthy blend. Just add a bit of Nutella or chocolate shavings to a protein shake or a banana smoothie to get your fix. Or, if you need caffeine, order a café mocha. The flavor will be there and will satisfy you without actually eating any chocolate!
