Emma Off The Record: Necessary Bonding

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Having a best friend is cool and all, but you know what’s cooler? Going to college in the same city as that best friend and living the same exact distance away from each other at school as you do at home across the country. Now that’s cool. This is exactly what happened to me when I got into BU and my best friend since kindergarten got into Northeastern. We live about fifteen minutes away from each other, which is the same distance at home, give or take traffic.

While the two of us may go to school right next to each other, sometimes our crazy busy schedules keep us apart for months. We talk nearly every day though, so when we reunite it’s like all that time apart meant nothing. When we first got to Boston, the two of us would try to see each other once a week to keep each other updated on our lives and talk about all the confusing, weird, and exciting experiences that college life was throwing at us both. These weekly coffee dates made my transition into college life a lot easier but as the semester barreled along, the two of us found ourselves thrown into extracurriculars and classes that demanded most of our attention. Our weekly get-togethers turned into bi-weekly, then tri-weekly, then every month or so meetings.

I eventually got so caught up in the grind that my mind felt like a pinball machine with the pressure of work, school, extracurriculars, and maintaining new friendships bouncing around my head. I missed my best friend, but I knew that she was also trying to balance these things, too. At this point, we have a mutual understanding that no matter how hectic and full our plates are, we always know that we are there for each other––even if we can’t see each other face-to-face. We live our separate lives, but we know in the back of our minds that we are still very much a prominent part of each other’s lives.

This semester has proven especially challenging for us since our schedules kind of lie on opposite ends of the spectrum. I’m going to class and working shifts at my job, and my best friend has a 9-5 job because of her co-op. Her weekends are filled with sorority events and club meetings while mine are usually reserved for shooting footage for my photojournalism classes or working more job shifts.

Our schedules are all over the place, but sometimes we manage to block off necessary bonding time. Last weekend, we went to a candle making workshop, leaving all our worries behind to immerse ourselves in a fun, hands-on crafting experience. As we waited for our candles to dry, we spent the afternoon wandering around Newbury Street, window-shopping and popping into stores occasionally. It felt so good to be back with my best friend enjoying each other’s company.

This week’s playlist is filled with songs that remind me of the kinds of carefree afternoons I love spending with my best friend. I included some hits from the soundtrack of our friendship over the years like the Arctic Monkeys’s “Riot Van” and “When Did We Stop” by New Move (a song that I think I could listen to till the end of time). I also added a few bops that we always sing along to on when we’re driving around at home like the Miguel and Kali Uchis collaboration, “Caramelo Duro” and Kehlani’s “Keep On.”

I love spending time with my best friend no matter which side of the coast we’re on. I’m so lucky to be able to say that I get to see my best friend while I’m in college since when we’re together it truly feels just like home.

xoxo,

Emma :)
