Eight Reasons to Go Greek at Boston University

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Formal Recruitment at Boston University – the process through which young women can decide whether or not to join a sorority –  is just around the corner. But, before you go through recruitment, you have to ask yourself the question: to go Greek or not to go Greek? Here are a couple of reasons why you should definitely go Greek.

1. It’s an opportunity to make a ton of new friends.

Joining a sorority is the perfect way to branch out and make new friends at a large school like BU. Recruitment may be an emotionally and physically strenuous process, but after four days of getting to know the sororities and the women in them, you can be confident that the one you end up with is so excited to have you. Developing these friendships will take time, but then you’ll find yourself with lifelong friends and sisters!

2. You aid a great cause.

Every sorority has a philanthropy they work with and fundraise for. Each sorority will have a different focus and organization so you’re sure to find one that excites you and matches your values. The philanthropy events throughout the year held by each sorority are really fun, whether they are centered around food, sports, or games. Plus, the entire Greek life community and usually other students are invited to partake in the philanthropy events so if one of them sounds like fun you’re more than welcome to attend.

3. Empowered women empower women.

Sororities were founded by women at a time when they did not feel welcome and included in university life. Thus, secret sisterhoods formed in order to provide support for one another. Although women have majorly advanced in society since then, sororities are still important for the same reason. If you join one, you’ll find yourself with sisters eager to support you in everything you do.

4. Your sisters will accept you for you.

Whichever sorority you end up in, you get to be completely and unapologetically yourself. Sororities don’t want you to be like them, they want you to be like you, so be yourself! Greek life revolves around unconditional love – embrace it!

5. You can better yourself.

Not only can you be yourself, but you might also find yourself or at least discover new things about yourself by joining a sorority. Every sorority is centered around a set of values to live by and those can impact your identity and life in a lot of ways. When you’re surrounded by people who support you and lift you up, it provides a great opportunity to become the best version of yourself.

6. You’ll be showered with gifts, crafts, love, and apparel.

Joining a sorority means making room for a slew of presents ranging from painted canvasses and cute notes to t-shirts that have been passed down from generation to generation in your sorority family. Big/little week and reveal is the best week of the Greek life year – it’s like Santa coming every day! You’ll receive cute decorations for your room and then it’s your turn to get creative.

7. You can rep your letters.

We’re talking t-shirts, sweatshirts, necklaces, hats, bags – you name it, they have it with letters on it! Your sorority letters will turn into your favorite brand of clothing. When you’re proud to be part of something, why not show it? Plus, the apparel that’s been passed down is usually some of the comfiest stuff in your wardrobe which is always a plus.

8. You meet all different kinds of women.

Every sorority at BU is diverse, meaning you get to learn about women from various backgrounds, countries and ranges of interests. By hearing different perspectives, you learn more about the world and it may inspire you to try something new. Your college experience and friendships could be hugely enhanced by joining a sorority.

There are so many great reasons to go Greek at BU – friends, philanthropy, empowerment, etc. Greek life gives you the opportunity to be yourself but also find yourself and better yourself. Make the huge BU pool feel a little smaller and try going Greek!
