It has been a month and a half since the freshmen members of the 116th Congress of the United States were sworn in. Out of the 67 new Democratic members of the House of Representatives, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has received most of the attention both on social media and in the news.

Despite criticisms that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is too radical or leftist, it is her honesty and strength to call for deliberate, immediate change that makes her so special. From her background as an active organizer in her community which was put on hold after her father passed away, to her approach to politics today, Ocasio-Cortez is a role model not only in the congressional field but for all Americans.

Her intelligence and thoughtfulness shine in congressional hearings. Her presence on Twitter and Instagram attracts young people to be attentive about what is occurring in the news. Her well-spoken, authentic speeches show character and clear communication. Her openness about the realities and intricacies of Washington are popping the bubble of the political elite.

Ocasio-Cortez is a game-changing congresswoman whose influence extends beyond Capitol Hill. On her Instagram story, her topics of conversation range from the mental health benefits of wearing a matching pajama set to the process of being interviewed for a program like 60 Minutes to the importance of the Green New Deal, a momentous resolution demanding drastic policies to combat climate change. It feels like Ocasio-Cortez can do it all. And even more so, she expresses the notion that you can too.

There is something for everyone to learn from the congresswoman. She simply bridges the gap between Congress and the public and is unapologetic about her values. And in light of criticism, she has the unfaltering resilience to advocate for others and stand for her beliefs.
AOC’s journey from waitressing to representing New York’s 14th Congressional District is inspiring for all, especially young women. Every day she demonstrates that women, regardless of the hateful feedback they are bound to receive, can and will accomplish their goals. Every day she emulates the idea that with passion, honesty, heart and good old-fashioned hard work, change is possible.
Every day her voice continues to be heard, and because of her, so many others will be heard too.
