5 Ways to Maintain Healthy and Beautiful Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Your hair is a part of your everyday look and whether it’s straight, wavy, curly, or frizzy it can have its bad days.

Maintaining your hair is part of self-care and sometimes requires a little more effort than just brushing your teeth would. It’s not always going to be perfect, but there are a few ways to guarantee it’ll look its best at least most of the time.

1. Get haircuts more often.

At least for me, getting a haircut is an ordeal. It is a scary process, especially if you have long hair but cutting your hair, no matter its length, is the key to healthy, voluminous hair. An occasional trim gets rid of dead ends and boosts hair growth. Opt for a trim every four to six weeks.

2. Don’t over wash your hair.

Everyone is different in regards to how often they wash their hair. Ultimately, it is a known fact that washing your hair too frequently can be detrimental to hair health. Over-washing can lead to dry hair and even hair thinning. Dry shampoo is a girl’s best friend on the days you decide to skip a wash.

3. Don’t overuse heat on your hair.

Using hot tools on your hair too often can both burn and damage your hair. Embrace your natural hair and avoid heat when possible. Skipping the heat can also help avoid split ends and brittle hair. Use a heat protectant spray to help avoid further hair damage and burning if you have to use a hot tool.

4. Nourish your hair.

Use hair oil and other nourishing products to give your hair moisture and natural shine. Who doesn’t love smooth and silky hair?

Keep your hair balanced, wash after wash, by occasionally switching up your shampoos. This will ensure that your hair will be nurtured and have all its needs fulfilled.

5. Take hair vitamins.

Ultimately, the root of all self-care lies within. Vitamins are a good alternative for some people that need a little extra boost in hair growth. They are certainly not suitable for everyone but can be a good natural alternative for enhancing your hair.

These are my tips and tricks for maintaining healthy, silky, and voluminous hair. Prioritize your self-care, both inside and out! Remember, we all have bad hair days. Maybe now we can avoid some of them…
