Four Words: Demi. Lovato. Is. Back.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

Demi Lovato is back and we could not be more grateful.

After her STUNNING and incredibly emotional Grammy performance, her new single ‘Anyone’ dropped. If you haven’t listened, we highly suggested that you do here.

Wearing a gorgeous white gown, Demi stood in the middle of the Grammy arena on a small stage and gave us a performance of a lifetime – supported only by a piano.

Demi has always been open about her struggles with addiction, and in June of 2018, she debuted her song ‘Sober’ where she confessed about her recent relapse. She was hospitalized in July of 2018 and was checked back into rehab. Since this scare, Demi remained quiet on her social media. She also had not stepped on a stage for two years.

The audience held their breath as Demi was clearly struggling to get the words out during her Grammy performance. The crowd cheered Demi on, and the piano started up again. She radiated emotion, vulnerability, and fragility. She started over and took the world by storm with her breathtaking voice. The audience and viewers could see the tears in her eyes during the whole performance, but her voice was able to power through and she delivered what can be argued the best performance of the night by far.

This performance is her first time hitting the stage since the overdose, and she performed her new song ‘Anyone’, which she recorded just four days before being hospitalized.

“I tried to talk to my piano, I tried to talk to my guitar. I talked to my imagination, confided into alcohol. I tried and tried and tried some more. Told secrets ’til my voice was sore…a hundred million stories and a hundred million songs, I feel stupid when I sing. Nobody’s listening to me.”

Demi clobbered passed the tears and hit high note after high note, really proving she is back and here to stay.

The lyrics of ‘Anyone’ are incredibly emotional and can bring anyone to tears by just listening to the first thirty seconds. Listeners can hear her plea for help and can begin to further understand the indescribable struggles she faces every day with her sobriety.

Friends of Demi took to social media after her performance, expressing their gratitude and admiration for the singer. Long-time friends Selena Gomez, Sam Smith and P!nk were among those who wrote kind and heartful words on their social platforms.

We think we can speak for the masses when we say that we are so incredibly grateful that Demi is working toward better health and is able to express her struggles through her music. We can’t wait to see what she will release next!
