The colder it gets, the stronger the temptation becomes to pull up to class in a hoodie and pajama pants. But what would our favorite 2000s television show characters say? And while there’s nothing wrong with staying cozy, I find that I feel my best when I actually get dressed. If you’re anything like me, finding something cute to wear when it’s raining and 40 degrees out can be a struggle. My favorite solution? Channeling my favorite movie and television show characters. Something about tapping into my inner Elena Gilbert, Rory Gilmore, or Charlotte York gets me out of bed and face the cold with enthusiasm. Here’s how to dress like your favorite characters this fall and winter:
Rory Gilmore
How could I not put her first? Rory isn’t just the perfect academic inspiration; her fall fashion has been consistently iconic since Gilmore Girls first aired. Her college wardrobe is perfect for early-mid fall, before the temperature drops below freezing, and every walk outside our dorms is a slip-risk. Her chunky white sweater from the pilot episode is all over my Pinterest feed at the moment. It’s easy to recreate: pair it with black leggings and chunky boots, staples most of us already own. Throughout the series, knit sweaters in red, blue, and cream remain a staple. Think turtle necks, low-rise flared jeans, and mini skirts over tights. Knee-high boots and scarves will keep you extra warm while also staying true to Rory’s style.

Elena Gilbert
Continuing with the early-2000s vibe, next up is Elena Gilbert. I’ll admit she’s responsible for my recent obsession with Henley tops. The Vampire Diaries is a classic fall and winter show, and while we’re battling midterms instead of monsters, maybe borrowing her wardrobe will bring some of her courage along, too. Stock up on Henleys (bonus points for a white lace cami underneath), bootcut jeans, and at least one pair of Converse. A brown and black leather jacket, like the one pictured, will be a must-have in the cold weather. For variety, throw in the occasional jean jacket or tall boots over skinny jeans.

Charlotte York
Out of the Sex and the City four, Charlotte York’s style is arguably the most timeless, and I’m thrilled to see her getting the recognition she deserves recently. While Samantha and Carrie bring their fun, unique flair, Charlotte’s classy, feminine aesthetic feels especially right for the colder months. Her signature look is built on basics like fitted sweaters and button-ups, midi skirts, and trousers. If you’re more of a jeans girl, go for a mid-rise straight cut. For layers, blazers and trench coats are perfect. Charlotte has been known to rock plaid and polka dots (which I hear are making a comeback this season). Stores like Zara and Nordstrom have plenty of options that won’t break the bank if you shop smart.

Peyton Sawyer
Though a somewhat controversial character, One Tree Hill’s Peyton Sawyer has an undeniable, effortlessly cool look that’s hard to resist. She’s a bit edgier than the other three options, and the perfect character to channel if I’m feeling a headphones-on, Led Zeppelin blasting kind of walk to class. The black leather jacket is a non-negotiable; Peyton is rarely seen without one. Pair it with a vintage band tee: think The Cure, Fallout Boy, The White Stripes, or whatever other rock and/or punk bands your heart desires. For bottoms, go with dark-wash skinny or flared jeans, or brave the cold in a leather or plaid mini skirt.

Dressing like your favorite characters might not let you escape from the dreariness of midterm season, but it definitely adds a much-needed spark to the colder days. Whether you’re channeling Rory’s cozy academia or Charlotte’s timeless polish, these tips will help your wardrobe feel a little more cinematic.
