Whether you are a first-time or returning visitor to the city that never sleeps, watching a Broadway production is a must. Situated around the tourist hub of Times Square, enormous billboards promoting all kinds of shows, from Aladdin to the Phantom of the Opera, are hard to miss.

One of the options that stands out for me is the majestic musical of Moulin Rouge, which narrates the forbidden love affair of a poor Englishman with a glorious cabaret singer named Satine. The musical romance is intertwined with drama as Satine is battling a fatal disease and becomes the esteemed prize possession of a Duke who promises Satine’s manager to save their cabaret from bankruptcy.

The spectacular production leaves the audience speechless as they are taken aback by the dazzling costumes and innovative set. The insanely talented lights production is responsible for the fantasyland that is brought to life through the stars’ clear sky, the club’s pulse-pounding lights, and the dark streets of Paris. With sparkles and confetti everywhere, the lush sensorial aids are one of a kind.

Among loyal fans of Broadway who keep up with the shows offered, it is commonly known that the musical’s only drawback is that the songs are not up to date. However, fear not, as the new cast does not disappoint and sings modern songs from beloved music industry artists such as Katy Perry, Sia, Lady Gaga, and Adele! Paired with professionally choreographed dances and upbeat remixes, every musical act mesmerizes the audience as it notice how each lyric has a meaningful connection to the thoughts and emotions of the characters.

When I saw the play, the breathtaking acting of protagonists Sahr Ngaujah and Ashley Loren contributed to a layer of the show’s success. Clinging to the edge of my seat, I was in awe of the realistic performances that provoked me to contemplate true love and the values one should live by. Every scene evoked a different feeling according to the tone set by the actors, which at times left everyone in agony and mourning or in happiness and excitement.

Not being afraid to deviate from the original musical songs and storyline, the show focuses more on the sensational and lyrical side of the story, which is why this is undoubtedly one of the most unique experiences you could have on Broadway. Coming out of the glorious Broadway theater, the noise of the city implored me to wake up from the dreamland of the cabaret. The unbounded reach of the theater is felt at its might, raising the question of which show should follow next.
