Small Business Spotlight: Roots

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bristol chapter.

Roots is a beautiful, lush little plant shop in Bristol city center, right by Harbourside. It’s the perfect one-stop shop to pick up a potted plant for your windowsill, a succulent for your work surface or a thriving house plant to give your home some jungle vibes.

Her Campus had a quick chat with Sam from the Roots team to get to know more about their experience as an independent business in this difficult year of Covid-19.

Q: What does Roots do? Tell us about yourselves!

I’ve been a florist for 15 years.  We are an independent florist in the centre of bristol, we sell flowers and plants.

Q: What is the story of Roots’ journey? When was Roots founded, by who, and why?

I used to work in the shop and then my boss decided to retire, it was an amazing opportunity that I couldn’t turn down.

Q: What values are core to your ethos? And how does your ethos come across in your business?

Creativity is what we are all about and our customers really understand that and let us totally go with the flow, it’s awesome!

Q: What has been the greatest struggle that Roots has faced as an independent business this year?

Covid has been the biggest struggle this year, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions…

Q: How can students and locals support Roots – both in the short-term in this national lockdown and over the rest of the year?

Honestly Bristol is such a fantastic city! It feels like everyone is so supportive, the kindness people have shown us and each other is just amazing.

In this difficult year, with a global pandemic and nationwide recession, support your local businesses and shop local when you can!
