Ape Alliance: An Upcoming Event About People and Climate Change

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bristol chapter.

The destruction of the rainforest is not breaking news. Every day acres of land are cleared and destroyed, at the cost of animals and their natural habitats. In response to this, many people have come together to try and prevent this destruction. In 1996, Ian Redmond founded Ape Alliance to encourage conservation organisations to work together. Redmond is a tropical field biologist and conservationist, renowned for his work with great apes and elephants. For more than 30 years he has been associated with Mountain Gorillas, through research, filming, tourism and conservation work.

Ape Alliance is a coalition of organisations and individuals who are committed to fighting for the protection and conservation of apes and their habitats, by providing a platform for discussion, publication, and campaigning and fundraising. The Ape Alliance includes more than 80 member organizations and a network of hundreds of specialists, all of whom share a concern for Earth’s incredible primates. But within this concern is another issue which is becoming more and more alarming and urgent as the years tick by: climate change.

Climate change is the single biggest threat facing our planet; its effects are already being seen globally, and it has the potential to cause untold and severe consequences in the future. Not only for us, but also for every species on Earth.

So, what can you do to protect our planet?

On Tuesday 19th April, Ape Alliance will be holding a climate change panel discussion, headed by Ian Redmond OBE.  Ian and a panel of guests will be discussing how we as individuals, voters and shoppers can help solve this global problem.

Climate change is happening, and it will affect us all, so this event is open to anyone who is interested and would like to attend. Best of all, it’s free! Spaces are limited however, and so we ask that you register your place beforehand.  To register your place, and to learn more about the event and Ape Alliance themselves, visit their website at www.4apes.com

The event is being held in the University of Bristol Pugsley Lecture Theatre, inside the Queens Building, BS8 1TR. We ask that people try and arrive for 6.15pm so that the discussion can begin at 6.30pm. The discussion should then continue until around 8pm.

It’s the little things, such as these panel discussions, that can make big differences – all it takes is for people to come together.
