Grrrl PowHer Hour was GREAT!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brenau chapter.

The ladies of Brenau must attend formal convocations throughout the academic year. Convocations are formal, inspirational and motivational to the Brenau students maybe even some faculty and staff. The most energetic convocation of the year is always Grrrl PowHer Hour. This is informal and encourages our ladies to wear pink in unity to signify strong women who can overcome the battles of every day life and recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year’s second annual Grrrl PowHer Hour included a series of events. Kicking off the convocation was our upbeat drumline that energized the student filled audience. This was followerd a prayer led by Dean Valerie Simmons-Watson.

After a warm welcome from Dean of the Women’s College, Dr. Debra Dobkins, the Tau Sigma Dance Fraternity let the crowd know girls run the world with a performance to Beyoncé’s hit song “Run the World.” The ladies had an outstanding performance, exciting the crowd with their on point dance moves. Immediately following, Brenau’s Got Talent Winner, Amanda Washington took the stage to perform the song, “Almost There” known from the Disney movie, Princess and the Frog. The performance received a standing ovation. The Brenau Ideal performed a musical composition by Cody Otero shortly after Washington’s performance and opens up the stage for the guest speaker, Lindsey Nelson.

Nelson is the Vice President of Global Sales Productivity and Talent Development. She gave a motivational speech about how life does not always begin how we plan it to, but we can still perseverance no matter the obstacles. By showing several videos, she connected with the audience using several celebrities and well known impactful people across the globe. There basic messages of how hard life will be and how it will kick you will you down will only remind you of how strong you are. The speech was full of visuals to grab and maintain her audience’s attention. She continued to stress to the crowd that even though being a woman is difficult, we can always persevere. A great choice for a Brenau’s Grrrl PowHer Hour speaker.

Lastly, the Brenau Vocal Chamber Ensemble sings the Alma Matter “Still I Rise” and Vice President Amanda Lammers says her thank yous and goodbyes. The Drumline concluded this year’s Grrl PowHer Hour. Another successful, impactful convocation in the books for all the Brenau students.
