Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brandeis chapter.

No matter whom you are buying for this Valentine’s Day, here are some gift ideas for the special people in your life:

1. The Fallback Plan

Although this is option number one, this should really be the last possible gift option no matter who you are buying for.  Flowers, Chocolates and Teddy Bears are just plain boring.  Don’t get me wrong: I would not mind getting all three of these things (okay, maybe the teddy bear—I’m not five), but these are the gifts that require no thought.  Valentine’s Day is about showing someone you love and care for them.  Choosing this option means that you didn’t put too, too much thought into your gift, which therefore translates into you not caring that much about your relationship…

2. Baked Goods

I wrote about Reese’s Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies last week, and I still think this is a great option.  By baking someone a treat like cookies, brownies or cupcakes, you are showing them that you recognize that this holiday is about sweets, but you took the time and put in the effort to make them something special.  Everyone appreciates baked goods (except maybe those of us who are dieting…) and you really can’t go wrong with this gift.

3. Tickets

This category is very broad and is really dependent on who you are buying for.  Once again it will require some thought from you, though.  Does your significant other really like Mumford and Sons?  See if you can still score her some tickets to an upcoming show.  Is s/he really into the Celtics? Try and snag some seats to the next home game.  Even if all you can afford is the nosebleed section, your boy or girlfriend will appreciate the thought, and still be pretty pumped to go to a show/event that they really like.

4. A Mix-Tape

This option may be a little overdone, but it requires thought and knowledge about your partner and therefore it can be a really meaningful gift.  I was watching How I Met Your Mother the other day and they referenced a CD that Marshall had made Lily for Valentine’s Day back when they were in college. I don’t know about you but I think their relationship is pretty awesome…

5.  A Homemade Card and/or Gift

Sometimes the best gifts, and the most meaningful ones, are those that are made from the heart.  This option is also really nice to your wallet.  Check out this website for some DIY gift ideas.  They even have a recipe for homemade Nutella (YUM!).

6. Lingerie/Boxers

Way back when the Gossip Girl books were more popular then the show, Jenny buys Nate silk boxers (for Christmas, but whose counting).  This idea can be a little raunchy and fun, or it can be sweet, but most importantly it should be for your significant other that you feel intimate with.  In my opinion, if you and your significant other aren’t sleeping together, then you probably shouldn’t buy them underwear, or they might expect that you are going to be very soon.  That is, unless you want this to be your segway… who am I to judge!

7. Movie, Popcorn and his or her Favorite Candy

Plan a movie night with you and your significant other.  Buy tickets, the movie or even rent a movie, it doesn’t matter.  What this gift is about is planning an event where you and your sweetie will be spending time together.  That is the key here!

No matter what you decide to buy this holiday season, make sure you take some time to think about who you are buying for.  What would they really like?  Will your gift show that you really care for the person? Because in the end, all that matters is that you show the person that you love them!
