Though initially dreading the return of the mushy potatoes and unidentifiable meats of Sodexo, I was pleased that my second semester was greeted by the sweet, tangy smell of plantains and buttery puff pastries filled with beef. “Campus Staycation”, Sherman and Usdan’s very own cultural food trip around the world, will serve meals fom Haiti, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Jamaica, Thailand, and Greece during lunch and dinner on various dates (found on https://brandeis.sodexomyway.net).
I was nicely surprised when I walked into a Haitian themed Sherman, complete with Haitian music playing over the speakers (who knew Sherman had speakers?!), and introductions to the chef whose recipes were used next to the food. You can expect each cultural themed meal to be prepared from a staff member’s very own recipes and a small introduction to their cultural background. Bringing flavor and something new to the average Brandeis student’s palate, “Campus Staycation” is a great way to get to know unfamiliar cultures without traveling too far!
“Campus Staycation” lunches will always be served at Usdan, and dinner will always be at Sherman. On top of a variety of new and mouthwatering dishes, Sherman also recently had an All-American themed dinner, complete with red and white checkered table clothes and, you’d better believe it, steaks for all. Though I was unable to finish half of my giant, well-done steak, I did finish all of my onion rings, corn-on-the-cob, and jalapeno poppers. It looks like second semester will be full of exciting, unfamiliar tastes, as well as comforting and familiar ones.
