Everyone starts their year out with a new goal, last year I promised myself I would run a 5k. I trained throughout the year, bought new outfits, shoes, equipment and learned to manage my time to be able to give it my all. Here is what I learned from my last year of running.

1. take things slow

I was not a runner before I started, I always loved the idea of going on a run, but I didn’t have the lung capacity to keep going. In January I would get on the treadmill and run as fast as I can before I could even hit a mile I was struggling. After many failed attempts I started over, I ran at a very slow pace where it was as slow as my walking pace until I was able to get my breaking under control. As time went on my first mile without stopping was easy to do.

2. get comfortable

Get comfortable with reaching a faster speed on the treadmill, this was always scary to me because I thought I would fall but a little faster every time gets easier. Find shoes that don’t hurt your feet, for me it was On Cloud Runners but it’s different for everyone. Get comfortable running in public, it takes getting used to but it’s worth it. Find an outfit you feel cute in, when you feel better about yourself you will fill better about going on a run.

3. Watch advice videos

I went through a deep dive on TikTok to help me learn to run better and faster. I recommend finding ones that work for you too. The creators who worked for me are Chayse Byrd, What Runs You, Hollyb_Fitness and Shelby Sacco. Each of these creators goes through tips to help you whether it is breathing, consistency or posture, they got it all.

4. Get a playlist or app

I downloaded the Nike Run app and the coaches help so much. They distract you, hype you up, coach and they have a great playlist that comes with the app. You can go through a training on the app to help prep for your race or if you want to just log your race you can, plus they have a run app for the apple watches.

5. Get a running buddy

My sister, Nora, and a friend from work, Allison, were my biggest inspirations to keep going, they made me feel okay with taking a day off and even better when I would bet their time or distance. You need people who will challenge you and support you even on bad days, go find yourself a Nora and Allison.

6. Hydrate and eat

You need something to burn off so make sure you eat before and after you run. You need to stay hydrated so get yourself a cute water bottle and drink water.

Remember It doesn’t matter how fast you go as long as you finish the race for yourself. This is for you, and you will feel better at the end, I know from experience and I’m proud of you for starting.
