Finding Comfort in Being a Musical Oddball

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bowling Green chapter.

When I underwent the transition from high school to college, there were several thoughts running through my mind about how I was going to “reinvent” myself. After all, all I had heard for the past 6 months was how college changes you; forces you to become yourself with your newfound independence. I don’t know about you, but that sounded pretty daunting.

As the world has been going through a pandemic, most of what I saw about colleges in the present day is from social media. In particular, I found solace in TikTok videos of current university students and their daily experiences.

If you’ve seen it on your FYP, I love the videos that ask students what music they are listening to as they walk on campus. They look something like this:

So, naturally, the thought entered my head about what I would potentially say if someone came up to me and asked me that. In high school, I went through many phases of music and now everything is sort of a brain-mash of just… me. That includes some Broadway, pop-punk, pop-country, and a whole collection of Megan Thee Stallion (Megan, if you’re reading this, when is our joint birthday party?)

Thinking about sharing my music with others sounded a little scary, especially if I’m trying to “reinvent” myself or look cool for new friends. Y’all, I thought this “caring about what other people think” stopped in high school… I thought to myself, why do I still fear being judged?

I will bounce from Taylor Swift to tick, tick… BOOM! I will go from listening to “Girls in the Hood” by Megan Thee Stallion to “good wife” by Kacey Musgraves. To literally anyone else, this might seem insane. But to me, this is who I am. This is what I find comfort in, this is the music that makes me feel like me; the music that makes me feel alive.

So, friends of Her Campus, I encourage you to follow alongside me in my journey to not care anymore. After all, I love these artists so much I would love to tell everyone about them now, even if they are a weird combination together. At least it makes my Spotify Wrapped interesting.

…and speaking of Spotify, who would I be if I didn’t go ahead and plug my music taste for our lovely readers?

Here is the Her Campus x BGSU playlist that our team made at the beginning of our 2021-22 semester! Enjoy some faves from our executive board and our amazing writers. (We have pretty good taste if I do say so myself.)

And here is a playlist that I like to play when I’m working on Her Campus articles, editing, or doing some homework. It is truly the amalgamation of my music taste all in one. It is a mess and I love it that way.

Lastly, here is the playlist that I like to walk around campus and feel like the main character to (updates to come!)
