So, your grand plans to travel abroad over spring break have fallen victim to the cost of tuition and books and, if you are like me, your inability to plan anything in advance. Luckily, going home for break still offers a lot of options aside from becoming a hermit for a week and binge watching your latest Netflix obsession.

  • Did the calendar gods smile upon you and your friends? If your friends from home are on break at the same time as you, you have a world of opportunities. Treat yourself to a spa day, take a hike, or even revisit your favorite high school haunts (that 24/7 diner with the best pancakes in the world, anyone?). If you aren’t up for spending any money, a Netflix marathon in a blanket fort with friends is totally acceptable. Enjoy the free catering of whatever you can rummage up from your parents’ cabinets.

  • Pick up any work you can come across. Babysitting? Dog walking? House sitting for the neighbors who could go abroad? If you left your high school job on good terms, call and see if they’d be willing to schedule you for the week. Sure, you won’t have any scenic pictures to post on Instagram, but when you get back to school you’ll appreciate having the extra cash to buy a coffee, go out with friends, or splurge when Forever 21 spams you with emails. You can even save what you make so you can enjoy a trip over the summer.

  • Don’t scoff, but this could be time to catch up on homework. Camp out in your favorite coffee shop with your books and just veg out. When you get back to school, you will be able to take a breath and won’t be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of work that you have.

  • Day trips are your new best friend. Discover all that your state has to offer through local parks and historic areas. You’d be surprised how many hidden gems are scattered around just waiting to be stumbled upon.

And, worse comes to worst, you can never pass up on a week of homemade meals and time with your family.
