Tips For Starting Out Your Semester Strong

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Belmont chapter.

Spring Semester can be tough. It’s cold when you start classes, and it also may be dark by the time you get done. Here are some things I’ve learned to help me start my semester off smoothly, and therefore set me up for success!

1. Once you get your syllabus, put all the test dates and due dates in all of your calendars!

This is good so you never forget. When I say “all your calendars” I mean your computer, phone, if you keep a paper planner, desk planner, and more! This is so you never miss an assignment, test, or class if you don’t have to.

2. Try to order your books elsewhere.

Buying books from your college gets pricey. Yes, it may be convenient to just order them, but you can save HUNDREDS if you try to by them elsewhere. Check amazon, other students, or google books. Google books is my favorite because they usually have a rentable online version for less than $100! This saves money as well as saves you from having to walk around campus with lots of books, because you can conveniently pull them up on your laptop.

3. Work Ahead the first few weeks

Usually the first few weeks are pretty slow. Profs are going over the syllabi, and not many are assigning chapters to read or papers. This is your chance to work ahead. If you have a math class, do the first couple of scheduled assignments. In business law? Read the first chapter. Speech? Start brainstorming topics. Do what you can while you can before things get crazy. Your future self will greatly thank you.

4. Set out your clothes for the next day, or even week!

This is a habit that creates less stress in the morning. Instead of groggily picking out an outfit at 7 or 8 am, you can have it ready to go when you wake up!
